ok, so i'm really wondering the validity of chip times, as i did my first sprint tri this past weekend, and started and stopped my watch the exact moments i crossed both chip platform things (only one at the start and one at the finish). the race day results showed my chip time 37 seconds faster than my watch, and now the online results show a chip time 39 seconds slower than my watch time.

now that i have 3 times for one race, which one do i believe? while i'd love the lowest time, i think i'll stick with my watch time. any ideas why there is such a difference in times?

i've used chips in running races before and not had such discrepancies, so it's a bit strange.

I always go with the final results that they have me with at the race.

you sure you started and stoped it exactly?  Are you sure you didn't receive any penalties?  That would account for the official time being longer then your recorded time

On the last race I did, I decided to go with the gun time, because it was faster than my coworker, who usually beats me. So, HA! HA, says I!

By chip time, he beat me. Maybe a minute, little less than.

I don't know of any 37-second penalties.

I've noticed that chip times vary from watch times by a few seconds, but I've never experienced that much of a difference.

maybe you just got a whole lot of them

Actually, it sounds like they had computer issues and had to switch to the back up hand timed system.  I believe it would be worth e-mailing the RD for an explaination.  At my last tri, it was all hand timed with a computer that they just type in your number and hit a button as you pass through transition, so it would time stamp when you came in and left.  The old people running it couldn't read the body marks or hear you yell out your number, and then took a fricking century to input the numbers.  Took them a week to iron out final times and a number of people were lacking bike and run splits.  In that race, a friend of mine timed me and her time came out a good 5 min faster then what official time was.  I just figured that if my time was that screwed up, everyone else's must be too, so I went with the official time and ranking.

Slight hijack:  Vince, which race is that where you're wearing your Aquaphor Active gear?

In regards to time, 37 seconds isn't really that much.  5 timing mats and when you started and stopped your watch.  Did you start it when YOU hit the water or when the gun went off?  Just some error possibilities.

well, it was an interesting race. we had to run over the starting mat, which is the exact point i started my watch, and jump in an outdoor pool. there were no splits at all, just my own mental splits, and i never stopped my watch until i crossed the finish mat at the end.

i didn't start until 2 and a half hours into the race, as we had to swim slowest to fastest, and they only had 16 people in the pool at a time, so it took quite a while. i'm thinking that may have had something to do with it.

all in all, i'm going by my watch. thanks for the input from everyone. either way, it was a great first tri and i'm happy with my times and efforts, and i still won an age group award, so what more could i ask?
