Subject: Swim Training Tales
Well, I'm new to this Triathlon gig and have no idea what to expect. In typing this I'm wondering if some of the folks that have been through training for a Tri before can provide some insight on what to expect as one progresses through the swim training. Biking I am familar with and since I came from a running background I have that down pretty well from an expectation and progression standpoint. What about the swimming?

I just finished my first week of swim training and am now into my second from a swimming standpoint. My first 3 workouts in the pool I started out pretty slowly with about 100 meters of warm up at a slow pace, some drills and then some free swimming for another 100 or so metters for a total of about 400 to 600 meters. This week, yesterday and today, I cranked out 1100 meters with a 30 second or so break every 50 meters. I am not concentrating on speed right now. I am more focused on form and reducing the number of strokes it takes to get to the other side. I have gone from 22 or so to about 16 to 17 per 25 meters in just 5 pool workouts.

When will I notice a difference from an endurance perspective. I seem to be able to do about 50 to 100 meters and then I need a break for 30 to 60 seconds. It is a bit challenging getting used to regulating your breathing well and is very different from running and cycling. When you need a breath on land you just take it, not so with swimming.

In short, when did it start getting a bit easier for you and when did you notice a difference in the distance you could traverse without needing a little bit of a stoppage? Just curious.

Sounds like me when I started. It increased little by little. It took about 6 weeks before I was able to swim for 800 yards or so non-stop. Just keep doing what you're doing, you'll get there.

It took a few weeks before being able to do more than 100 yards or so at time and then a few more weeks before I built up to 800-1000 yards at a time.

I would suggest getting some structured swim workouts and not just swimming so many yards.

I find that if I don't change things up that I get bored with swimming and then don't swim for a few weeks. Today was my first time in the pool in more than a month.

I am going to get my workouts together, so I don't just swim like I did today. Swimming laps can get boring after a while.

Where's a good place to get a sampling of swimming workouts? I picked up TI and it has some good swimming drills to use but I am such a newb to swimming doing laps is all I know at this point. Any suggestion would be great!

I use Fitness Swimming by Emmett Hines.

It's got months worth of workouts and uses the same style of swimming as TI.

Check out this website. I came across it while looking for swim workouts. It takes you from 0 to 1 mile in 6 weeks. It worked for me. I usually will throw in some drills into the mix every once in a while as well.

Good luck.

Joining a Masters Swim group in your area will probably get you there quickest. They are coached workouts and structured. You'll get technique help regularly.

Go to the USMS website and follow the links to find clubs in your area. Make contact with the listed coach to make sure that you have the latest swim times and places.

Good luck. I've gone from beginner to keeping up with former college swimmers in about a year this way.

Your mileage may vary and all that, but I can share my experience if it's any help.

I started swimming in February and couldn't do a lap without panting as I just didn't know how to swim properly at all.  With regular but short visits to the pool, it took me probably about a month or so to do a very slow mile.  In late April, I started Master's swim and my times have gotten faster every week (it isn't evident in my logs, but it is certainly evident in my interval times during training).

Thank you all! This is great insight and information. Just after 2 weeks I do find myself getting a bit stronger and not as winded. I'm looking forward to seeing continued improvement over the next 13 weeks.
