Quick answer: swim in a shorter pool.

I just found out that the pool I've been training in is actually 33m across rather than the 25 I assumed. So while I'm still pretty slow at 2:30 per 132m, things aren't quite as bad as I thought. I suppose with a bit more experience I will notice things like this.

Sweet!!!

I had a similar experience with the Aquatics director at my local pool.  She was 100% positive that the pool was 25 meters.  I thought it was yards.  After a bunch of "I'm sure you're wrongs" and "I'm the aquatics director here, I know what I'm talking about" we got a tape measure out and sure enough, 25 YARDS.

I will take any victory I can get in the off season.

I remember going to a meet during summer swim season back when I was in HS that was at a pool that is 20 yds long rather than the standard 25 yd pool.  Many people qualified All-American times that day!

Who designs a 33 meter pool?  I mean seriously!  Heh it just seems odd is all.  Those who swim in a meter pool imo have a distinct advantage over us yardies!

Our indoor pool at the Y is 25 yards.  Outdoor is 25 meters.  Normally do 3000 indoors; however, the pump broke.  So we had to use the outdoor.  For a week I thought I loosing my game.

Saw a 35yd pool at a military base once.  Reason for the odd length was reportedly so they wouldn't be asked to be used by local swim teams for training and competitions and could just be a training tank for the active duty folks.

FWIW it is probably 33.33 m rather than 33. My understanding is that it is that length for water polo

I had the opposite happen.  After training in a 25 yard pool my very first triathlon was in a 25 meter pool but it said on the website that it was a 300 yard swim.  I couldn't figure out why I was slower than in training, I thought it was due to nerves!

One of the outdoor pools here is 137m long. You just made me google it and it came out to about 150 yards. I guess that is why it is such an odd length. We use the metric system here, so everyone just calls it 137m.

The local pool here in Menlo Park CA is 33m. I've never understood this, since unless you are doing 100s (or multiples thereof) it messes everything up.

I honestly have no idea why the pool is 33 meters. The stock answer is I live in Southern Africa, where questioning the thought process that goes into most public decisions is an exercise in futility.

But maybe it's for water polo, as another commenter suggested.

Either way, I look at it as good training for my OWS, as I probably add 30% on my distance by constantly veering off course.

yep 33m was traditional for water polo 30m required for the 'pitch' plus 3m to allow for the goals

Its easy enough to tell the difference between what i assumed were 25yds vs 25m pools..or so I thought.   All newer pools in Canada are 25m since we switched from imperial to metric back in the 70's.

But...i've always just assumed that they were 25m...maybe i'll actually measure it out just to make sure next time i swim!

The local olympic size in Waterloo at the rec complex I believe is 52m long.  there is a 2m wide moveable bulkhead they can roll around and keep in the middle to separate two 25m pools.  Also, with the full 8 lanes, I have always been told that when they put in lanes width wize...it's 25 m accross.  with this thread..i'm definitely checking that out!

I did a lot of complaining in college that when we converted the pool to long course it was 55 yards instead of 50 meters, meaning the pool was about a foot too long.  Not sure if my complaining was proportional to the extra length.

This is a pool of a High school that I use to live near. a 25 yard pool on the bottom. On the top an 8 lane 50 meter pool that also had the lines going the other way so that it could be used as a 20+ lane sc.

Top pool = 50mx25y

It took me 12 years to knock 15 sec off my 100 fly time... the last 0.8 took 4 years.

At our Axiom Gym, used to be Gold's, the debate went on between us swimmers and multiple staff members whether the pool was 25yds/meters or what. I finally brought a tape measure to the pool and everyone stopped swimming while I took my measurements. Result....22yds and 2ft!!! It's a little tricky figuring out the total mileage of a swim! Story goes that they planned on a waterfall wall at the one end so had to shorten the pool. Dumb idea in the first place and they never did get the waterfall working.
