Subject: Time for a new FTP test
I've been building back my biking legs after a run focused fall and early winter. I finally had a workout tonight that suggested it might be time to reset my FTP on TrainerRoad. I faded a bit in spots, but I didn't completely tank it for the final interval.

But I won't be doing it before the Tour of Sufferlandria.

Congrats! Same situation here. I don't have a power meter but did the FTP test recently on the Computrainer at the tri club in my hometown. I don't have a power meter or club here, and for some of my workouts I use a stationary with a power meter. I have been using the same FTP forever and I'm sure it's out of date as workouts have been too easy lately if I don't push the watts up by 10-20. (Jorge stuff is supposed to feel like impending death, right?) But keep delaying an actual retest as I hate the thought of doing it in front of all those people at the gym, some of whom are my students and parents thereof. Most are casual exercisers and would be worried if they saw me retching and moaning with tears of pain running down my face. Tri club folks would just say, "Oh, 20 minute test, looking good!" and think that was perfectly normal!

I am re-doing mine on a computrainer tomorrow.

Should I use the FTP from the computrainer in my TrainerRoad account I have set up at home, with a KK Road Machine? Or would the values be a little different due to the fact TR is based on Virtual Power?

trainerroad is relative, but accurately relative - meaning your actual power output might be less by anywhere up to 30W, but assuming you've kept your tire pressure consistent, the differences will be measurable as you make gains. However, I wouldn't ever take an FTP # from TR and expect to see the same from a powertap, quarq, or computrainer.

For Virtual Power, use the info gathered from that. Don't take it from the computrainer or anything else as the difference could be significant.

That is kind of what I thought. Thanks.

And ... to reiterate ... if you plan on beginning the Tour of Sufferlandria on the 26th, don't be messing with things prior to that. It's going to hurt. And it's going to hurt good.

That was my main point in mentioning this.

If you have a KK Road Machine, the InRide is a good investment. The InRide gives you "spindown calibration" - without calibration, your FTP results will be all over the place. Slight differences in tire pressure, or the number of turns, will all affect your results.

A KKRM plus Inride will give you very accurate results that are comparable with a PowerTap, Quarq, CompuTrainer etc.

At $200, InRide is not cheap but it does include a $80 BlueTooth HRM (wish they'd sell it without). It's designed to work with their own iPhone app but I use it with Trainerroad.
