Subject: Silly Bike Computer Question

I'm a complete newbie. I trained a bit last summer and competed in one sprint tri and plan to compete in many more this summer.

I just bought a brand new bike and am trying to decide what to do about a bike computer. Here's my situation even though I'm sure you'll find it quite silly.

1) I do own a Garmin Forerunner 310xt, love it and plan to use it to record all of my training sessions  & races and log them online.

2) The old bike I used last year had a simple, wired computer on it so I could always glance down and see speed and distance.

I LOVED this setup. I know that you can mount the watch on the bike but I really liked not moving it from my wrist for the whole race and still being able to glance down at a mounted speedometer.

I planned on keeping this same setup with my new bike except now I'm throwing an indoor trainer into the mix. This would require me to have the Garmin Speed/Cadence sensor in order to record any kind of information at all about my indoor training sessions.

Here's my silly issue: I really, really don't want to change out the wrist band on my 310xt and mount it on my bike outdoors. I want to always keep it on my wrist with the original band.

So my question for you experts... is it possible to have the Garmin speed/cadence sensor talk to my 310xt when I'm inside, but talk to another (hopefully simple and cheap) computer when I'm outside?? Am I just being too picky? Thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Use the google to figure out which computers are compatible with the Garmin speed/cadence sensor. Then you can run both computers side-by-side indoors and drive yourself nuts trying to figure out which one is telling you the truth so you can upload it to your training log.

Oh good! I think that's what I was trying to ask. So, I CAN have two units working simultaneously off of the same speed/cadence sensor??

That is awesome, thank you!!!

This is a great topic.  I have a Garmin 910 and the Bontrager Duotrap speed/cadence sensor.  I love my watch but its not very easy to check it out while riding.  I was thinking about picking up a Edge 510 and have both going at the same time.  I did a Sprint Tri last Sunday and never once was able to check my watch while riding.  Id love to have another computer right in front of me to check cadence etc.

Basically the Garmin spped/cadence sensor or any other ANT+ sensor transmits data (sends out data).

ANY device that is willing to listen (ANT+ paired) will listen and show/record the data.

I am not even sure if there is a limit to it.

This means:

You can use any ANT+ speed/cadence sensor or power meter and simultaneously track the data on a 310XT/910XT and Edge computer and ANT+ android phone and ANT+ iPhone (if you so desire).

The challenge will be to find you a cheap (which is relative) ANT+ bike computer. Edge 500 is $250 already. If you ahve an iPhone look at Wahoo and their iPhone ANT+ accesories. I ahve an android and could not (yet) pair up with ANT+

I race with a 910XT on my wrist and a 310XT on the bike. No problem.

Bontrager node computers are less expensive options that are any compatible.

I'm in the same situation - picking up my new speed concept with duotrap this week and just upgraded my 310xt to 910xt but want to have a dedicated bike computer that will stay on my bike (I'll have my 910 on my wrist while racing.)  I found a bike computer that works with ANT technology that was a lot less expensive that Edge 500 so hopefully the duotrap sensor will take to both the bike computer and my 910xt.  If you have any recommendations or helpful hints let me know.

As long as you pair each to the duotrap, it should work no problem.
