Subject: USAT Swim Rule Interpretation

A friend of mine asked me this question:

"Can you use a water noodle to float on BEFORE the start of the race if it's a deep water start?"  Apparently at IM MOO last year, they had a deep water start and you were treading water/floating for 20 min.  She was asking if you could use it before the race.

The USAT rule says you can't use a flotaton device DURING the race, but what about before?  The only other thing I could think of would be she could get a penalty for leaving it on the course (littering).  But what about the actual use of it?

Thoughts?

If you swim with a wetsuit you float - is IM Moo wetsuit legal?

They make an exception for wetsuits in the rule.  And I believe it was wetsuit legal.  I agree that even I, the most buoyantly challenged person, float w/ a wetsuit.  But she's never worn one and was curious.

What are you going to do with it after the race starts? I'm thinking possible "abandonment of equipment" violation.

I wondered the same thing until I swam in my wetsuit and floated like a buoy.  I could fall asleep in that thing and I'd still be on top of the water.

No idea, but I am sure my gut would explode with laughter if I saw someone floating on a water noodle prior to an IRONMAN race....

I agree Chris!  That's what I said.  But she was serious.  That's the only thing I could think of too, Bear.

Good question.  Who wants to tread water for 20 mins. before starting a IM?  I'd want a noodle too!

Nice try.  We all know you would just want it so you could ask tri girls if they want to hold on to your noodle.

And the point is that you are already wearing a noodle.  It's called a wetsuit.

If she's never worn a wetsuit before, I'd say it's a perfectly legitimate question - 20 minutes of treading water is somewhat tiring (sans wetsuit) and if I didn't know what a wetsuit would do w/the extra bouyancy, I'd be wondering if there was an alternative, too.

Sure, the whole thing is silly, but just for the sake of arguement ... hypothetically ...

In the video of the Hoyts, dad is towing a rubber dingy that the son rides in. Couldn't you tow a noodle behind yourself without breaking any rule? not saying you'd want to ... but could you?

I'm sure someone is searching the rule book.

... and don't they let you rest on stuff as long as you're not making forward progress?
If this is legal, how long before some non-swimmer tows a big inflated rubber ducky to rest on during an IM swim?

but by towing something you are increasing drag, making yourself more tired and more likely to need somthing to rest on.

as to the original question, I agree, the only 'official' problem I can spot is equipment abandonment.

I don't know the answer to the question, but I saw something real interesting at the race expo at Gulf Coast this year. I don't remember what the device was called but it was a belt that you wore around your waist and it had a CO2 cartridge attached. If you get in trouble swimming you just twist the CO2 cartridge and it blows up the belt creating a flotation device. They had documentation from USAT saying it was race legal. I wish I could remember what its called.
