I too am another late bloomer. And I have to say the chappie from England - Mark - made me laugh with the girlfriend / satan thing! ha ha! I don't exactly get a standing ovation from my husband when I say I need to go swimming etc...But then again, maybe they're just jealous because deep down we all want to accomplish tough things...overcome fears, do what we've dreamed of... and not everyone digs down to make and keep that commitment.

Anyhow... doing a super sprint next weekend with like 2 weeks of swiming and maybe a month of running (if that). Biking is what I've been doing for years so it's just 2/3 of the race that will have me freaking out and nearly hyperventilating next Saturday. YIKES!! Easy, easy... relax... take your time, goal is to finish so don't worry about anyone passing you.

This board rocks! You are all awesome!

This is great! I thought I was crazy until I found this thread! My husband and I started training for our first sprint this month...and the race is late August. Like many of you, we have a strong base and a running background. We started swimming this week and will be finally getting our bikes on Wednesday. Good luck to everyone else trying to squeeze in a sprint this season!

Most of you are really doing well with training.  Good Job.  A few people dont seem to be logging so its hard to tell.  If you are training, log it so the rest of us can cheer you on!!

Mid-month in July, how is all the late-season starters doing?  Any training plan questions?  Anybody have races coming up?  I've been peeking at some of your training logs, keep up the great work!

got my first super sprint tomorrow. A bit freaked but it's mostly because I have noooo idea what to expect in transition areas, don't know the course, have not trained long enough, and its really hot and humid here!

Other than that...I'm psyched!

I am doing my first sprint tri on Sunday. Started training w/ a group in May. Developed Bursitis in both shoulders in June so I had to slow things down a bit. (BTW: it was an eye opener to me to discovered that the pool swim and the open water swim are only slightly related to each other. Had to work on it and get used to a wet suit.) At the same time, I have had a great time training, feel great, dropped clothing size(s) and love the people I have worked out with.

After Sunday I am going to let my shoulders rest and heal, but I am going to do what I can and enjoy every minute of the event. This will not be my last.

Good luck tomorrow w/ your first event.

I finished 76th out of like 134 women. I'm happy to have finished. I didn't walk any of the run, biking felt great, and although I wimped out a bit during the swim (breast stroke at times)...I am overall pleased.
Just shows me I need lots more training on the run and swim portions!

I know you were so worried about this race, it sounds like you did a fantastic job!!!!! Who cares if you swam a little breastroke (unless you kicked someone), you finished and you feel good about yourself. Now, when is your second one?!?!?!?

Well, it was a great day. Overall felt good. Iced my aching shoulders until just a few minutes before I warmed up for the swim. Fun and beautiful event.

To my very surprised self, I took third in my age group and 136 out of 279 overall. Now, if I can just get my open water swim better....

The shoulder rehab my have to wait a few weeks. I think I my enter the Pyramid Lake Sprint Tri on Aug. 8.

I have the bug.

BbMoozer, ~50% placing...great job for your first super sprint tri...a solid MOP'er.  With continued training, you will be moving up the ranks with ease.

ecatell, nice AG placing and overall standing for your first sprint!  Hope your shoulder is doing ok and improves.

I think it is safe to assume there are some triathletes in-the-house1

MOP short for Middle Of Pack.  Also FOP, BOP and the more specific FOFOP, MOFOP, BOFOP, FOMOP, MOMOP,  BOMOP, FOBOP, MOBOP and BOBOP...personally I am a FOBOP and sometimes a MOBOP, but never-ever a FOFOP'er...that's the stuff of dreams.

Go get um Mike, it doesn't matter that you start late, what is important is that you started, you set your goal, and are moving forward towards your goal. I did my first sprint last year on a suggestion from someone, and only had 4 weeks to prepare, but I did fine, and what is more important, I got bit by the Tri bug, now it is my life.

Mike,

I'm am also from Portland so I'm assuming you are doing the Lobsterman and one of the August sprints (Maine State, West Kenebunk or Wild Bear). I'll be doing all of them but Maine State since the B2B is the day before.

This is also my first year of triathloning. I started training in May for the Lobsterman with the intention of doing a sprint or two before that. But I got the bug to do a race earlier and I ended up doing the Shipbuilders Oly (My first) with about 8 weeks of training in me.

So I think you will have no problem getting ready for Lobsterman.

Also, it would be nice to get some kind of BT meet up before the race!

Jeff

Jeff,

Hello fellow Mainer!  My OLY will be the Lobsterman in September and the sprint I've signed up for is the Wildbear.  Did you say that you will be doing both?

I know how you feel about getting the bug and ending up competing earlier than intended.  That's pretty much what happened to me too.

I also noticed that you are signed up for the B2B.  Me too.  This will be my first year running in that race.  You mention that one of you LTG is to finish a marathon.  Are you thinking about the Maine Marathon this year?  I have been playing with the idea, but haven't made up my mind if I will focus on getting throught the TRI's this year and build up for next year, or just go for it this year.

Anyway,  we should definately meet up and do a bike ride or run Back Cove.  What are you doing for transport to B2B?  Want to carpool?  I will PM you later.

Mike

Mike,

I will be doing both the Wildbear and the Lobsterman, though I haven't signed up yet. I got two entries to the Maine Marathon (or Half-Marathon) at a silent auction benefit. I have been going crazy on trying to decide if I'm going to do the 26.2 this year as I have a pretty full race schedule and I'm not sure if can get ready in time and taper enough to do it without killing myself.

This year will be my second B2B. You will have a blast as the crowd is great and it is a great run. I have family coming up to run this year so I'm committed to ride in with them. But there is a lot of parking at Ram Island Farm and the shuttle back works out pretty good.

I would be up for some training rides. Send me a PM and we can see if we can arrange anything.

Jeff

Ernie:

Congrats on getting the tri bug. I am envious of your running speed, it has take me a while to get a sub 10 minute mile. Swim lessons helped me a lot when I decided to go for tri's. I still have a long way to go believe me but swimming is the most technical part of the sport where efficiency is king. Keep on getting out there find a race and register. It will give you something to strive for.

Best regards
Charlie
