Just started base training a few weeks ago. Planning on a sprint this fall & hopefully oly in spring. Been active & in decent shape most of my life but desk job last few years has turned me into a slug. I'm just starting a 9 week intensive sprint training plan that one of my books has.

I'm struggling to find races in the fall. I'm hoping to do the Tinfoilman in Tucson Oct 15 if I can find a carpool. Anyone else going? Can't decide if I'm brave enough to try the sprint in Parker, CO in Sept. Mike, what races are you looking at in NE this fall? My family's in NH... not much happening in WY in the fall.

Sandi,

Iwill be doing the Wildbear (sprint)  in two weeks Aug 19th, in Poland, ME and the Lobsterman (Oly)   Sep 16th, in Freeport, ME.  The Wildbear will be my first tri.

I'm coming up on my first tri a week from Sunday. I'm very excited and feel pretty good about my training -- I think the bike will be the weakest link, but I'm on track to finish!!

It's been inspiring to read about everyone's first tri's -- keep the stories coming!

Same here, Mike! Started a month ago training, and will be doing my first sprint tri in September. Nice to hear from Portland - I grew up in C.E. and miss the simplier life up there. Train hard, and HAVE FUN!

I'll chime in here.  I did a very short sprint as my first tri after training about 6 or 7 weeks.  I didn't originally plan on doing one that quick but I came to know about it and so I went for it.  I am really glad I did.  I gained a whole lot of experience about triathlon on a relatively easy/low key race and it was fun.  The race that I'm doing tomorrow is the race that I originally started training for.  With the first race under my belt I feel alot more confident but I also know that I am still not fully trained to my maximum level.  After training for about 2 1/2 months pretty steady I am just now starting to see some noticeable performance gains.

In my opinion, if you are confident enough that you can finish a race then doing one sooner rather than later is better.  Its just another training day.  I set a very modest goal.  I wanted to finish without walking on the run and I did that.

Congrats Jak! I, too, am looking at a training race a little sooner than I planned on, in Sept. My key race is the Tinfoilman Oct 15, but I just noticed that the swim is 825yd instead of 500. I feel like I'll be struggling to finish the 500 in Sept - I still can't do 100 without getting winded...

Mike, good luck in the Wildbear! and I'm impressed that you're going for an oly in your first season. I'll shoot for spring. Hope to make it east in Sept. Have a great fall!

Well Im official now!  Completed my first tri this past weekend!  Huge learning experience and even bigger fun.  Alot more difficulty with the swim than I anticipated but otherwise a pretty good showing.  Anybody interested can check out my race report at:

Congrats, Mike! I think it looks like a great first effort. I wish I could do breast and side strokes so fast! Way to go on the bike and run -- very quick! And great job on getting motivated by your swim instead of defeated by it -- you came back really well.

I'm right with you, as I did my first tri yesterday! It was a great experience, and I'm really looking forward to my second effort on Sept. 16th.
