I'm racing in my first Iron distance tri this saturday. The swim start is at 6 o'clock (because of the tides...). I'd like to hear about what people eat (or force down...) as breakfast the morning of the race. Here's my plan (feel free to comment!) :

Wake up : 3:45
Breakfast 4:00 to 4:30 (orange juice, bagel w/cream cheese-jam-peanut butter, espresso)
4:30 to 5:30 : banana, dates, sport drink
5:30 to 5:45 : Hydration (water+sport drink), 1 powergel if needed
6AM Start
Rest of day : Follow nutrition plan

I know that this is a bit late to modify my plan but I would just like to know what works (or doesn't..) for others.

Thanks alot for your inputs !

Christian.

Well, I'd be wary of trying anything new on race day so you should only stick with foods that you know agree with you.

For my big races I do something like this:

2:30-3am: leftover pasta from the dinner before (extra salt added)
Back to Bed
Wake up: 4-4:30am: bagel or wheat bread with peanut butter, sports drink
pre race setup: tons of water or sports drink
start: gel or something similar

Generally speaking, low fiber, medium to low glycemic index carbs are a good. Also something that will make you feel somewhat full. I like peanut butter and banana. The PB sticks around long enough that I don't feel empty halfway through the day on a mostly liquid diet.

I concur with others though, the #1 most important thing is not to shock your body with anything unexpected. Status quo will make you go. If you want to move stick with your groove, and all that...

be careful not to overhydrate. i was afraid to not get enough fluids as the day was forecast to be very hot (it was not) and had to like a racehorse during the bike segment.

i think the best course of action is to eat a really good pasta meal the evening before the race and then sleep in. you don't burn too many calories while sleeping.

Thanks a lot guys !

I ate my breakfast as planned (minus a half-bagel) and everything was ok. I had gastro-intestinal problems though for the bike course and almost all the marathon (as for many others...). We suspect there mught have been something in the river where we swam (St-Lawrence River, Québec City, Can).

I was so afraid of dehydration that I drank probably to much. I went peeing almost 15 times. As the wether was quite hot (28degC sunshine with a lot humidity...), I prefered to stop to the toilet than to dehydrate. As for the energy, I was good until the 35th k of the marathon where I swithced to coke until the end.

I completed my first IM in 12h16min which I'm very proud of...

Thanks again for the advices !

Christian.
