I know there must have been numerous postings on this before, but I missed them.

I just began performing running intervals. Last night I had terrible pain in my left knee--so bad it woke me up. It's better this morning, but when I went to get fitted for my bike by John Cobb (!), I told him about the pain and he mentioned ITBS. He told me some stretches to do to prevent it, but what I want to know is: how did I get it in the first place?

Thanks,

Kahne

usually you get it by increasing your running mileage too much or by running on a not level surface (roads) running on the left would give you ITBS on your left leg and vice versa.

mostly it starts with a sudden pain on the outside of the knee and a tight feeling weeks afterwards.

it's hardly ever caused by cycling - but who knows? i'm not an expert on knees, i just act like one.

ITBS can also be caused by biomechanical problems during the run. Not using the right type of shoes for your body can be a cause.

I also don't believe cycling will cause it, but it certainly can irritate it.
