Subject: Anyone NOT wear clip shoes?
I was wondering if anyone doesn't wear clip shoes when cycling. I bought my bike a few months ago and am doing my first tri in August. I didn't want to get the clips because I wasn't sure if i'd enjoy cycling enough. i DID however get the little cages to put my toes in to help maximize my pedalling and they seem to work well. I keep reading about changing your shoes to bike shoes and then running shoes but i just plan to wear my running shoes on both the bike and run leg. Anyone else?

I'm an ultra-beginner, and I've opted to do the same thing for now.  I ride my old mountain bike with slicks, and I have toe cages.  I'm gonna kick butt in T2

I know that there are huge advantages to have clipless pedals ... but I'm waiting till I can buy me dream bike, and outfit it with shoes, pedals, computer, the works.

For now, I'm on concentrating on riding more, and working up to "Ride Lots".

I rode in the mouse traps for two tris, a sprint and oly.  Went I went to the 1/2 IM, I went to clipless.  For me, I suck so bad, it doesn't really matter, tell you the truth.

I am riding my MTB, and have neither clipless pedals nor cages, although I have pondered getting them.  I will be wearing my running shoes for the bike portion so I do not need to change shoes.

 Peace.

Super-beginner here too. I'm doing my second race on Sunday. I use cages and running shoes at this time. I'm probably going to ask for pedals and shoes for Christmas. Until then, I'm going to enjoy how fast I am in T2.

I use the toe clips that came with the bike, mainly because I'm too cheap right now to buy clipless ($100 for clips, $100 for shoes? That's like three race entries!) And I wear my running shoes on the bike. It really does cut down on T2 time. Love it! Getting clipless will be a reward for more time on the bike (or my birthday, whichever comes first). Plus, I'm kind of uncoordinated.

Mouse traps? That's fun!

Me. I have nothing but the original pedals. I have the cages, and I took 'em off because all the roads around here are littered with lights and stop signs. And I just wear my running shoes on my bike. I also don't have cycling shorts, I just wear running clothes.

But I'm old skool, yo. That's how I roll.

That's fine, do what you can, do what you want, but be aware: Clipless pedals and shoes are the best thing you can do to improve your cycling efficiency and speed.

I'm still using cages and wearing my running shoes, but I plan to get pedals and shoes in the next couple of months.  I'm ready now.

I see several people doing that at races, and it's not a big deal.  Cycling can be expensive, and I've already invested several hundred dollars in upgrading my bike (not to mention $$ on the bike itself) buying a new seat, new derailleur, etc.  Next, pedals.  After that, aerobars.

I had plain old pedals and running shoes for my first du, then I had cages for my tri.  I'm so uncoordinated I think it would be a while before I felt good with clipless.

I did my first tri without clipless pedals and used pedals with toe clips.  It was nice that I didn't have to change my shoes before going out on the run.   I think clipless pedals are great to have - they've made me a lot faster.  But, it took awhile to get used to them, so it's probably not a good idea to get them right before a tri.

Clipless pedals are not all about looking cool -- they also help prevent some injuries. When you get into longer distances you will find the stiff soles on the cycling shoes will give your feet a firmer platform. Running shoes just can't accomplish the same goal. Plantar Fascitis is a real problem when you are pedalling hard in running shoes.

We'll all submit photos of new bikes, with a special zoom in of the shoes clipped on.... Just for The Bear.    Can't wait to join that club.  In the meantime I should really work some overtime and earn my bike $$$ rather than surfing BT.

My first two tri seasons were in toe cages.  I was starting to cycle again after a 12-year hiatus and didn't want the added stress of clipless pedals.

I just got clipless this spring (Xmas present was gift certificate to LBS).  I'm now faster...

DH is somewhat of a bike snob, so I started out with a tri bike with clipless pedals.  I'm still trying to "earn" my bike by riding lots and improving.

I do not wear clipless shoes.  I do use toe clips/cages though.   My biggest love is bike touring so I want the flexibility of being able to hop off my bike and climb a set of stairs to a waterfall overlook, or walk a slick granite path to a scenic cave (had a companion of mine try that in cleats and fell right on his behind going down the hill), or go into a restaurant with slick floors and not have cleat issues.  I've thought about getting shoes with a recessed cleat system, but then I think about it and what I have works just fine.   When I race, I am not in it to be competitive with anyone but myself (and perhaps the person directly in front of me   ).

I do have bike shoes though and I agree with the comment above about needing the stiffer soles.  They make biking much more comfortable.

BUT, for my upcoming sprint tri, the bike is only 9 miles and I will be wearing my running shoes.  Although I use my bike shoes 99% of the time, I've practiced with the running shoes and it really doesn't make a difference for me for that short of a distance.  I did the same thing earlier this year when I competed in a biathlon and that had a 15 mile bike.  No problems wearing the running shoes.

I have clipless pedals, but use mountain bike shoes (low top ones)... that way when a big hill kicks my butt and I have to walk, I don't fall on my butt. I try to save the falling for when I'm actually on the bike.

but one thing to consider about cost - if you bike regularly with your running shoes, you will "use them up" quicker. I don't know about yours, but my running shoes cost me $90 a pop. If they lasted for say 4 months instead of 6, then that's an extra $90/year you could spend on other stuff.

just another thing to think about.

Just a beginner, but I didn't have toe cages or clipless for my first sprint and did an OK 19.5mph in them. I did get a new bike and now have cages and can see the advantage in just the cages. From what everyone says, I will eventually get the clipless b/c I plan on riding longer as well as doing longer races.

My point, I guess, is for the smaller races you really don't need them. But if you can swing it, they are great for developing your form as well as increasing your speed.

I just got clipless pedals/shoes about 1 month ago. I probably rode about 1500 miles with the cages since last June. I didn't notice any speed improvement, but 95% of my rides are commuting to/from work where the traffic lights have more affect on my average speed than anything else. I can tell they make me better at lower cadences, but at 90+ RPM, I think my pedal stroke is about what it was with the cages.

In both of my tris, my shoelaces got caught in my crank/chain. This had never happened any other time, but it did in both tris. Also, the cages (even though were a "L") were too short for my running shoes (size 11) which made my calves hurt. This was especially noticable when I started running.

Ha! I don't even have toe cages. That's not because I don't want them, it's because I haven't gotten off my lazy butt to go find some that fit my ancient bike and put them on.

You'd definitely be faster with clips - probably faster and more rested to a degree that it would be worth the time lost to change shoes.

But, putting clip/clipless pedals on my old bike would be like...um...hm... like putting a skirt on a donkey - sort of ridiculous.

No clipless pedals or toe cages here... Why? I'm broke. I can't even afford the tri I want to do this weekend! I have a hybrid that I'm slowly transforming into a road bike (piece by piece - my dad is a bike geek), and my next step is to buy clipless pedals. Who knows?!?! Maybe I'll get 'em for Christmas so I'll have all winter to practice clipping and unclipping...indoors...

Have you checked out ebay? They got a clipless pedal/shoe combo for $60 bucks.

If you want, no pressure

swapped to clipless a good few months ago. i'm ridiculously unco-ordinated so don't let that be an excuse. I've got touring shoes with recessed cleats as i commute on my hybrid and needed to be able to walk normally.

i've recently swapped my cleats and pedals on my road bike and now cannot clip in on my hybrid - a total nightmare. clipless are great and worth the money. just make sure you get the correct pedals/cleats for you. i'm on my third type and finally think i have found something comfortable (crank brothers egg beaters if you want to know)

I find that I need as much time in T1 and T2 to regain my thoughts, that it is a nice distraction to change shoes and take that time for my body to adjust to being off the bike.
