Here is my story.
Last november I reached my peak weight of 215 lbs and my blood pressure was spiking to way to high for me.
So, I decided it was time to get going and I'd always thought of Tri training. Two years earlier I had a knee injury from running that sidetracked me quickly and still lingers a bit today. Never was running more than 6 miles a week. And other than that I hadn't done any real exercise since I was a teenager.
Well, I thought the trainer at the club was going to admit me to the hospital when she saw my blood pressure. I started very slow, concentrating on walking/running and geting my legs/knees strong. I had to take a week off here and there, and sometimes I managed to talk myself out of a week or two here and there too. :-
)
I finally managed the first mile running, two miles and just finished my first three mile last week and today was my PR 2 mile, don't laugh, 21:00. Ya for me! Best part, my knees feel great.
I started the swim in April. I can swim, but I've never had lessons and couldn't tell you the difference between the breast of butterfly at the time. I bought a couple beginner books and TI to get started. My first few swims I could not even manage 25 yards, now I'm training 40-45 minutes. I'm not sure how many yards I can do, but I'd guess 400-500.
I finally broke down and bought the bike in early June. Again, I hadn't so much as sat on a bike for 20 years.
I have only managed to put in about 50 miles on the bike. Some casual with my wife just to get used to the riding, shifting, balance and everything. Now I'm starting to get into more "training" with it.
And the bonus for me is exercise makes me more aware of my nutrition. I've lost 25lbs, lost fat, and added muscle. Most importantly for me the blood pressure is completely normal. I have somewhere around 20 lbs to go, but this was a year long goal for me and I am really only trying to lose the weight one pound a week.
I'm tentatively aiming at a sprint in September, but I'm not sure I will feel comfortable enough in the swim or bike. On the other hand, I don't know if I can wait another through another winter.
Everyone here has been an inspiration to get into my first Tri, thanks!
