~8C ... Toe covers TrishortsIf a wetsuit swim wear a base layer under your tri top and maybe a pair of gloves for the bike...If a pool swim wear a long sleeve top with a full zip on the bike (over a 1 piece trisuit if you have one). Ditch the warm top for the run.

Yikes!  At 40f, I am going to (try!) to dry my body, add dry long sleeve top, vest, tights, toe warmers, gloves and skull cap in helmet.  Slow transition is correct.  The wet tri-shorts  could be painful to the private area if it gets too cold!    I'm not sure I would want to race a triathlon in this weather.

I've never done a race that cold, nor do I ever hope to. My coldest was probably that cold at the start, with water being about 52. Wind and clouds. I dried off and put on windbreaker. My toes were frozen and numb until probably mile 5 of the 6 mile run!!

2 years ago I got out of the water that was steaming because the air was so cold. I got on the bike at 37 degrees. I wore a thin bike jacket. I wish I put on socks and/or toe warmers. The only part of m body that was cold after a few minutes on the bike were my feet. And they were frozen/numb by the time I got off the bike. They were fine after about 2-3 minutes on the run. How far is the race. Mine was an OLY. I would not want a longer /slower paced race, when that cold.

anything below 15C and my hands and toes freeze (poor circulation), even on fast paced runs I can be sweating and still have frozen fingers. for me I'd be thinking longer T1 to get dried off.

Head covering at +8 /40F will cause a heap of unnecessary sweating IMO.

You're going to get different answers, because cold resistance and heat resistance can be quite individual.

For me personally, I've done several races between 40 and 50 degrees.  For a sprint, I dress the same as if it were warm - just a regular tri suit.  For an oly or HIM, I'd throw on a long sleeve jacket in T1, and consider gloves.  For an IM, I'd take the time for shoe covers, a long sleeve jacket, gloves, and possibly long pants.

For others who are more prone to hypothermia and/or will be on the course longer, I'd suggest adding the extra thermal protection at shorter distances.

<<<---ETA: My avatar pic was from a HIM on a 50-55 degree day.  I just threw on the long sleeve top in T1, and was very comfortable.

On a 50-degree day last year, I left my swim cap on for the bike ride. That worked out OK.

I was curious about racing a sprint distance where the water is around 55 degrees. Do you swim in tri suit? Would I be weird if I wore my wetsuit for 10 minutes and spend the extra minute to take it off in T1? Or just fight the cold for 10 minutes?

Wear the wetsuit. If it adds more than 10-15 seconds to T1, you need to practice more.
