Subject: Race with watch and heart rate monitor?

The last few times I've raced (last season) my watch went a little haywire and the GPS data turned out to be useless.

I use it in training daily and do my run training based on my HR, but I'm wondering if I should just leave it off for my Olympic race this weekend.  The past few times I've competed I don't remember watching my HR anyway as I'm in constant push mode.

If I used it, I'm thinking it may be helpful just to have the HR/pace record for after the fact. What do others do?

I wear mine during races, mostly to have the data to look at afterwards.

In races, I mostly just pace myself by RPE.  I've tried to go by HR on the bike a couple of times during races (mostly to help prevent blowing up on the run), but it didn't really help me.

I use my Garmin 910 and HRM during races all the time.  I like the multisport feature and tracking all the segments seperatlely.  I plan to use it in my HIM in June.  The main reason I like using it during races is that the auto lap feature helps remind me to stay on top of nutrition.  I have the bike set to a 5 mile auto lap and the run to every mile.  The mile markers on the course mostly correspond to my GPS in my watch too.

During the run it's nice to automatically see the mile time and pace rather than hitting lap each time I cross a mile marker.  It shows me how fast I'm going or how fast I'm falling apart  :-)

Always use it. I train with it, I race with it. I would feel lost without it on race day.

It's great to look back at the data after the race. And for course that I am unfamiliar with the distances are nice to know, for race strategy

I use a hr monitor on the bike only to help with pacing. I run by rpe.

That's basically the same reason I stopped using my Garmin to race.  Wonkyness would insue and the data I would get was useless.

I still beleive keeping tabs of my HR is important, so I race with my Timex HRM.  Give me my HR and splits.

i have a basic HRM watch that I start when I start swimming and stop when I stop running.

It doesn't record much but time and avg HR for after the fact.

sprints, I don't pay attention to it.

HIMs I kept my HR within my zones for the bike and the run until the last 5 miles than for that I go off of RPE.

IM coming up will do the same as the HIMS

i like in on the bike to keep my effort in check, and i like it on the run to remind me that even though i feel like im about to die i can really keep going.

I've worn mine in the past.  I ignored the HR on the run, always way off for me (high) vs PRE/pace in HIM to Sprints.

This ^^^ is me also. Plus the after race data my 910XT gives me is useful for my training.

I have a garmin watch and an edge garmin for the bike. If I swim with the HRM on will it work when I get on my bike? Are most of you putting the strap on after the swim?
