Subject: New Crank (with stages power meter)
My cycling team has got a deal on cranks with stages power meters. I'm trying to decide between these for my tri bike. Is there a notable difference between the compenents? I'm talking power transfer or something like that, much less concerned with weight.

Shimano 105 5700 $649.99 less team discount $525
Shimano Ultegra 6700 $749.99 less team discount $600
Shimano Dura Ace 7900 $849.99 less team discount $675
Shimano Dura Ace 9000 $849.99 less team discount $675

Will DA 9000 chainrings work with a 10 speed chain?

yes, but you have to use the dura ace 9000 chain with the crankset.

At first I would have leaned towards the DA 9000 not only because it looks cool, but it has the ability to swap chainrings without consideration of BCD like other cranksets do.  So you could effectively change from compact to standard anytime you wanted to assuming you bought the extra chainrings.

Then I realized that Stages is only using the non drive side crank arm, so you could just get a 105 crank with the stages PM in compact, then buy a completely separate 105 crank in standard and simply use the Stages arm on both cranks.  Given the cost of a 105 crankset, you could accomplish this likey for less than just one new Stages DA 9000 crankset.

I suppose you just need to make sure that the Stages PM is compatible (or doesn't need to be recalibrated) when swapping the PM crank arm with different cranks (with different chainring sizes).  I don't think it's an issue...but just might want to double check.
