So i wanted your opinions on leaving the disc cover on for training? i dont have a second rear wheel that i can put a disc cover on and just switch out on race day so I was wondering instead of installing and uninstalling between every race would it be a bad idea to just leave the cover on and just do my training rides with it on? Advantages/Disadvantages??? PS I tried to search for this topic but couldn't seem to find anything, sorry if it has been covered previously.

Advantage - You'll be slightly faster in training

Disadvantage - You may hear grief from haters.

If I have a race or two that's close together, I'll train in my full race setup, but I can ignore haters.

I leave mine on because I have the backside taped to the spokes so it doesn't rub on the cassette. I do take the whole wheel off to transport

From the Wheelbuilder.com webpage:

"Disc covers are not intended for continuous training use. Remove covers between
races."

I have no first-hand experience with disc covers (I have a Renn disc), but it sounds like there may be a durability issue if you use them for full-time training.

I've left mine on for months at a time, just because I was too lazy to remove it.

It won't hurt anything to leave it on, and it won't hurt to take it off.

(I've had mine since 2009 and it is still holding up well)

It's only acceptable if you train in your aero helmet too

Eh I'll wear my Air Attack on rides sometimes.  It looks like a road helmet for the most part, but the visor makes it look a little "try-hard".

The biggest disadvantage I saw was how difficult it was to use my standard pump with the smaller opening to keep the tires fully inflated.

The biggest advantage I saw, and this was with just using it on the trainer, was that I worried less about the cat losing a paw while I was spinning.

Were you still able to use your pump without cutting a larger hole for it to fit? The pump I have is an over and under shrader/presta pump and I'm wondering I will still be able to use it without buying a crack pipe for it. The cover hasn't come in yet so I won't be able to test it until it does. I hope it gets here before 7/21 because I have a race that day and would love to be able to use it (I just ordered it yesterday).

I would guess you'd have it in time. I rolled the dice and did not buy the crack pipe, but it turned out I needed it. I preferred spending the $15 at my LBS than cutting the cover. It's a bit of a pain pumping it by myself, but it can be done.

As far as removing it for training...I have had 3 races in 6 weeks so I'm just leaving it on the whole time. I am too lazy to mess with it and plus, since most of my training rides are on the trainer, my wife likes it because it reduces her paranoia about my kids sticking their fingers in the spokes.

I don't care if people hate on me when I train. I train almost exclusively alone and really don't care what people think.

The only downside for me is the air pump thing.

The other benefits are that it makes me more aero on the trainer. Also, if you use a couple extra telephone books under the front tire you can really train hills on the trainer.

Pump:
I got a Lezyne pump that came with a 90 degree angle quick fill, works fine!

Cover:
Mine is taped on the inside to the spokes to avoid rubbing on the cassette.
Then I have it taped with a red tape to the rim (plus the plugs that came with it).
So yeah, I plan on leaving it on...

No problem to just leave it on. When I had one, I would swap my front race wheel out between races but leave on the disc cover because it was my only wheel with a PT and frankly, I was too lazy to take it off. Its just not expensive enough for me to worry about taking off like a disc wheel, for example. Never had an issue.

Used a crack pipe for inflation...no issues there either.

As with any race wheel, may damage in a crash etc., but at $90 I suppose it may be worth the risk.

I use it on my PT wheel and with the popoff of the PT spindle (?) it takes 5 minutes to put on, so I swap it out.

I did not have to cut a larger hole but it was very difficult and I'm sure was not good for the cover as I had to manhandle the thing a bit.

A lot of good info being thrown out here. Thanks everyone! Another thing, how many of you have issues with the chain rubbing on the disc cover? Instead of the recommended 5mm I only had about 3.5-4mm so I'm a little worried of rubbing when I'm in my largest ring while climbing steep hills. I know many people tape it but do any of you still have problems after taping?

I had cassette rubbing issues at first, but a small cassette spacer fixed that issue.

Hell, I use my Giro AA with the shield and my Hed disc for training...let the haters hate and goof on me; I'm having fun and you should too before we're dead!

And you also have to wear your tri-dork helmet backwards when using your disk wheel in training

I'm lucky to have original wheels plus my race wheels (which aren't great but are carbon and lighter) so I just switch out quickly.

So which one is best for you? It boils down to the aforementioned questions only you can answer and, ultimately, to what extent you will use it as a tool for winter cycling fitness.
