Subject: Rim tape?
Ok, so what is the purpose of rim tape for wheels?  Like a dummy who just got new wheels, I just stuffed the new wheels with a tube and tire and am wanting to ride em all over the place (cuz they sexy!) and then I recall my other wheels having rim tape on them.  The are Mavic Kysrium's.  Do I have to throw some tape in there?  Thanks in advance for input as always BTers.  Y'all rock!

Primarily keeps your spoke ends from puncturing your tubes. Definitely a necessity, get you some good stuff to put in there.

Is there a difference in rim tapes? I just got a set of wheels and went to put the tube in a realized they weren't already taped...those bastards. I have to go and buy some tonight. What should I look for?

And don't use that crappy plastic rim strip Mavic ships with their wheels. Go to the LBS and pick up a couple of rolls of Velox rim tape.

Rim tape keeps your tubes from poking out through the spoke holes and then getting irritating flats.

Buy good stuff that will last, I like the cloth tape, it's supposed to never wear out.  The little plastic stuff wears out eventually and then you have mysterious flats that go on for a while until you figure out the problem.

Back to the drawing board I guess.  Did I mention the new wheels look sexy?

Neither do my race wheels, but they don't have traditional metal spokes either.

There are some spoked wheels that don't have nipple holes in the rims. I can't remember the brand/model right now. These don't need rim tape.

Any rims that have holes in them that the tube could come into contact with need rim tape.

Use Velox rim tape, everything else is crap.

I could be wrong, but I don't think my Kysirium Elites don't have rim tape. They do have flat bladed metal spokes. I have only had to change a flat once, and I recall looking, but I can't remember for certain if they had rim tape.

Well they certainly don't need any.

Nashbar only sells Velox in 10 packs or their own "high quality poly rim strips" indvidually for  $2.  are those similar to the aforementioned "crappy plastic rim strips" ?

Yes...poly rim strips = crappy plastic rim strips. Your LBS should have the Velox.

I took a look at the new wheels and no nipple holes.  Then took a look at the old ones and could see the indentations from the nipple holes.  Looks like you learn something every day and more importantly, I dont have to redo the new tires.  Anyone want some rim tape?
