In BT parlance, I think PR = Personal Record and, of course, PB = PEANUT BUTTER!!! There's been at least a handful of threads devoted solely to PB so let's keep it defined as such. Smile

Another important BT term is BSM, aka Black Spandex Man - Triathlon Superhero.

I have never really understood IM (individual medly). I am not a born "swimmer," always good at running.
Also, one term that came up was FUBAR. When you crash your bike and you can't fix it, it is FUBAR... F*$%ed Up Beyond All Repair!

Why not add some of the big names in the sport, Gordon Haller, Paula Newby-Fraser, Dave Scott, Tim DeBoom, Natascha Badmann, Faris al-Sultan, Michellie Jones, Peter Reid, et al.

And there's Gu, the wonderful supplement.

I have never really understood IM (individual medly).

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Individual_medley

Individual Medley consists of four strokes, swum in this order:

Butterfly
Backstroke
Breaststroke
Freestyle, with the limitation that freestyle means any style other than backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly. Most swimmers use front crawl.

And again, from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freestyle_swimming

Freestyle means any style for individual distances and any style but breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke for medley competitions. Most swimmers use front crawl.

That's a wheelsucker. Chain suck is something different altogether:

Chain Suck: The chain fails to disengage from the bottom teeth of a front chain-ring ; instead the teeth snag the chain and carry it up and around the rear circumference of the ring, winding it back onto itself, and jamming it between the chain-rings and chain-stay.

Around here IM usually does not stand for Individual Medley. IM stands for IRONMAN!

i.e. I didn't feel like doing my planned TT today so I just noodled instead.

You guys are awesome. Thanks to my delay in compiling, I've got about 85 - 90 terms. I just need to clean them up, confirm a few definitions, make it pretty and get it to Ron.

Thanks everyone!

Random ones as they flow out of my brain... sorry for any dupes.

n00b or newbie: someone new to the sport.
RD: Race Director.
TT: time trial (often seen as TT bike).
Fartlek: a funny Swedish term meaning 'speed play' that is a relaxed method of interval training.
AG: Age Group
Hardware: award for placing in your AG (medal, trophy, maple syrup, etc.)
OA: Over-All, as in overall placement in the race.
T1: swim to bike transition.
T2: bike to run transition.
T3: run to beer tent transition.
Du: short for duathlon.
Aquabike: new format where you just swim then bike.
Race packet: the packet you get that has your number, swim cap, chip, etc.
Goodie bag: the bag of free stuff, coupons, ads, etc. you get when you pick up your race packet.
RI: Rest Interval
140.6: Ironman distance (2.4mi swim, 112mi bike, 26.2mi run)
m-dot: Description of the Ironman symbol
Dolphin dive: Technique used to get through shallow water that is more efficient than wading by doing short shallow dives, standing up, repeat until you get deep enough to swim.

Someone asked about MS. I think that's "Multi Sport".

Transition run gets used a lot too, but I don't understand how that is diffferent from a bike/run brick.

Sarah

I don't know the answer to that either, so I'm hoping someone will step in.

Anything that came up here that wasn't answered and I don't know, I'll do research. I'll also be adding some that haven't been suggested. I'm hoping we'll have a pretty extensive list for our first edition BT.com glossary!

--leslie

A transition run is just a short (around 10 minutes or say 1 mile) run off the bike, where a Brick - otherwise known as bike/run/ick - is usually a longer run.

A brick can be a swim/bike as well - any two triathlon workouts, in order, back to back, with less than 10 minutes in between workouts.

How about these?

2 a day - two workouts per day
"the washing machine" - referring to an OW swim start
Gel - any of assorted gooey energy products (and they get us to pay good money for this stuff)
Energy Bar - Clif Bar, Power Bar, etc. etc.
IMLP - Ironman Lake Placid
(maybe a subset list of the different IM's and their associated abbreviations)
1/2 - 1/2 Ironman
Mary - Marathon
1/2 mary - 1/2 marathon
Ultra marathon - or just the word ultra - any run over marathon distance.

Maybe also a list of different distances -
10K - 6.2 miles
5k - 3.1 miles
etc.

I too think this would be a good thing to have as a main link page and something that could be updated as needed.

what is Mashing?

unless you're in the kitchen "mashing" is a cycling term where you pedal a big gear (53 x 13 or 14) with a slower cadence instead of spinning a smaller gear. In general it's thought that lower gear/higher cadence is better for conserving energy/processing lactic acid - it's the equivalent of Ford's only fill the shovel half full.
Mashing is pushing a monster gear with slow cadence - there is one pro IM racer - who does this - can't think of his name - the Scandinavian guy I think who gets a lead on the bike and dies on the run. Anyhoo - mashing a big gear risks lactic acid build up - like digging with the shovel full all the time.
Does that make sense? - yikes these things are hard to explain.
