Running Fit Triathlon
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 9s
Overall Rank = 138/408
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 20/55
Pre-race routine:

As always arrive early, check-in, get gear situated and head back to van to relax. Tiger's game was on, relaxed listening to that until my parents arrived. Then got them situated near transition and chatted until race time.
Event warmup:

I'm not a warm-up kinda guy, just waded around until my wave started.
Swim
  • 14m 33s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

Positioned myself on inside track to first bouy and stayed there, came out swimming hard then settled in after the first bouy.
This was a PR swim.
What would you do differently?:

Should have re-applyed anti-fog to goggles before race.
Transition 1
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Had a couple minor hicups getting socks on, due to rushing. This was a PR for wetsuit transition. For this year's season my transition spot couldn't be beat.
What would you do differently?:

Need to stay calm and trust my process.
Bike
  • 34m 31s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 21.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Just seemed to be flying, was climbing hills like never before, was pushing big gears when needed, just felt super comfortable and tried to save some for the run, turns out I set bike PR.
What would you do differently?:

Try to drink a little more
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Went down wrong isle but rack was at end of isle so just had to swing around and end and rack. Still second fastest T2.
What would you do differently?:

I took a few seconds looking for caffeine pill i through into transition before swim, well i found in about a quarter of a mile into the run, ended up in my shoe. Should have put this on the bike to have taken when coasting into transition.
Run
  • 26m 23s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Only took in drink at first station, to wash down caffeine pill, then it was all about not walking. There were a couple out and around sections where you see the competitors coming up on you, at the first one I saw a friend and that pushed me to keep going didn't want her to pass me but knew it would happen eventually, then with about a mile to go, saw another friend and was determined not to let him catch me by the finish (note, he started in the wave after me 5min behind). At this point I knew if I could hold him off I would have a great race. With 100yrds to the finish he started yell that he was coming and I went into full sprint mode. Of course the way the day was going this was a PR as well.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a bite to eat and headed to find my parents. Then just sat around chatting about the race with them.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Don't know, was a PR all the way around, I guess just keep training.

Event comments:

PR, PR, PR, can't wait to sign-up for next summers series, to see if I can't get any faster.

Congrats on a great race all around.  Fast splits in each leg.  It must have been a pretty tough field as those times would have been well ahead of the curve around here.

Thanks, first place was a blistering 56:xx, he was about to get out of the water before the third wave even started (about 10min). I just compete within myself so not worried about everyone else. Just like to see improvement and being able to put all three disc. together for a single race was just great.

Thanks again.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
