Weird pain behind the top of my kneecap.

About 5 weeks ago i injured my knee playing soccer. There was no specific impact or time that I can pin point when the injury happened. It started off as a slight pain behind the top of my kneecap but on a scale of 1-10 it was probably only 1 or 2 so i played through only for this pain to get worse and worse until it got to about 7 or 8 so i decided to call it a day at that stage. I didn't think too much about it afterwards and had assumed it was nothing to worry about. The next morning my knee was very stiff but did not swell and was not particularly sore. However when I walked downstairs I felt an intensely sharp pain which I can only describe as behind the top part of my kneecap. This pain didn't bother me 90% of the day, even walking up stairs! However walking down steps or stopping suddenly really hurts. Any ideas what I have done?

I've had similar symptoms to yours, which my Doctor diag as Chondromalacia Patella. Also look into Patella Femoral. Tracking issues. Sometimes called runners knee. Down stairs was much worse than up for some reason. Doc may find something completely different though its worth a visit imho.

I've had similar symptoms in both knees for a year.  I assumed it was chondromalacia, tendinitis and/or knee tracking issues and started rehab to address those issues.  They weren't working.

I finally saw an orthopedic specialist who did an x-ray and a few other tests that helped him determined it wasn't chondromalacia at all but rather bursitis.  The sac behind the kneecap becomes inflamed and swollen.  The fix is to ease up on activities that aggravate it for awhile (for me it's mainly biking and hiking down steeper terrain, similar to how it feels down the stairs), ice and avoid kneeling if possible.

I have several years of pain behind both kneecaps that I had diagnosed as chondromalacia, or patella femoral syndrome. Rest has helped, but I'm wondering if surgery offers a more full recovery.

I sometimes have severe pains on the top of my left foot. It feels like a knife is stabbing my inner foot on the outer portion of my foot. These pains happen mainly at night but not while riding.

My right knee has a pain in the front, just below the kneecap. I walked 24 miles of IM Louisville. No pain while walking but it started immediately when trying to run.

Yesterday I ran 10 miles. At mile 7 it started feeling sore. At mile 9.5 I got a shooting pain and walked the last 1/2 mile. I have a half Ironman to do in a week and a half. What are my chances?
