Subject: Planned Invitational Sprint Triathlon becomes Bike/run
Three of us planned the first Yorktown (VA) Invitational Sprint Tri for noon today, Saturday, October 5. Unfortunately, the planned pool swim (at USCG Training Center next to Yorktown Battlefield Park) was not to be due to the government "shutdown." Since one of my friends had done a (fast) 5K with his son in the morning, we ended up with a just a bike/run, which we did together.
Bike - 16 miles (just over 50 min); Run - 3.1 miles (25 min). I am 56; my friends are 44 and 49 (and they are capable of much faster). I live on the Battlefield National Park, so the run was entirely within the National Park. We'll try it again with a real triathlon when the pool has reopened. It only cost me three Gatorades, and I didn't have to get in my car! Next time we'll take a picture.
If you are a bit strapped for cash and time to travel, this is a good way to get in an "event!"

A friend of mine asked me to run for her in a sprint triathlon. I agreed, but I continued to regret it, as I had been training for nothing longer than 400 m for the past three months.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.
