Subject: Trainer Road question
I finally tried trainer road yesterday.

I did the 20min FTP test.

I know there is an option to "smooth" the current watts. I didn't see this in the options until after.

Anyway... I saw the watts jumping around at times... like up to 20 watts up and then back down.

I'm thinking it's one of 3 things:
1. my trainer was "off" a bit on my wheel.
2. my pedal stroke needs desperate help.
3. I didn't have the "smoothing" option on.

Any thoughts? thanks in advance

Could be any or all that you listed. It takes some time to develop a nice even pedal stroke and it would show especially once you start getting tired on something like an FTP test. Is it really sudden jumps or you just kind of look up and see that it changed a bit and you're still putting out the same effort? You could try and find your sweet spot cadence and just keep it at that for a while, if it's still jumping maybe check to make sure all your sensors aren't slipping at all and you have the smoothing on.

Mine did the same my first couple of rides. The smoothing really helped (I think I did the 3 second). Regardless, your FTP should still be fairly accurate. And you'll love trainer road... It definitely helps make the indoor rides somewhat bearable.

I have always used 3 second smoothing. While it may hide deficiencies in my pedal stroke, I like to see my power "steady", especially at harder intervals.

You might also check you sensor alignment. Mine was off a bit and caused wild swings when going hard.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback.

I put the 3 second smoothing on and will try again and see what happens.

I'm tempted to do the 20min test again. I left it at the default 200 when I did it. It recommended that I raise the FTP in my profile when the test was over. I just want to make sure I am setting it to the right number.

Thanks again.
