Subject: BIke Shoe Flex

I have a pair of Shimano SH-R098-A bike shoes that have a hard plastic sole.  Over the past few weeks, I have noticed a crease on the toebox of the shoe that ran front ward to backward.  I didnt realize what it was from, until the last couple of times on the bike when I noticed that the soles are flexing downward when I pedal which is causing the top of the shoe to tighten and crease. I realize that this is causing a some loss of energy to the pedals, but is there anything else negative about this?

Well I can't be of too much help here to fix it I am afraid, but the local pro at my LBS says this "Shimano parts are great, just avoid the wheels and the shoes at all costs".

This might be just the excuse you need to pick the new tri shoes I am sure you have been looking at????

PS-Bike shoes are NOT supposed to flex. You are losing power, the question is, would the small amount be noticable?

I think the only negative is that at some point you will need to buy new shoes because your current pair will be trashed. You might have to spend a little money and upgrade shoes and get some that have carbon on the sole. I don't think you will crash if your out riding and the shoe starts to give. I think you will be able to feel something going on before that happens. I just wouldn't ride so far that you have to walk a considerable distance if you can't get a ride.
