Pre-race routine:

Well everything was going aganist me before the race even began. I have been sick with a sinus and upper respitory infection so wasn't even sure if I should do it. But I decided to anyway. So we checkin to the hotel and get ready for bed, and lets just say the room wasn't the cleanest! Comfort Inn in O'fallon, MO. I had to call down to get fresh linens cause they hadn't been changes. Up all night coughing and couldn't sleep cause bed was very uncomfortable! So that set the stage!
Event warmup:

Get everything racked, asked my husband after he unloaded all of our stuff, "Can I have my helmet?" "you don't have it" etc yup! Don't have a helmet! Anyway after finding a helmet to borrow, which was HUGE, but that is ok, I still am going to race. Then to see that I couldn't wear my headphones on the bike almost made me give up at that point. I HAVE to listen to something. But I decided it wasn't that big of a deal, (I was crying inside) and still decided to contine!

Comments:

Well to add to the drama of my race the first stroke my goggles filled up with water, and forgot to set my watch! I had to stop and empty my goggles at each turn! I estimated around 7 minutes, and caught several people infront of me which slowed me down. And then got caught by a couple behind me.
What would you do differently?:

who knows! buy new goggles! although they have NEVER leaked before!

Comments:

Thanks to getsome, I was a little better mentally prepared for the bike. I kinda went easy at times to save my legs for the run which I am horrible on.
What would you do differently?:

Bring my own helmet! Go a little harder
Transition 2
  • 03m 23s
Comments:

I took my time, looked for the rules to see if I could wear my ipod! Took me a while to find them but it didn't say I cound't wear it so I put it on and was a happy camper!
What would you do differently?:

not take so long!
Run
  • 34m 54s
  • 3.1 miles

Comments:

I walked half way up the first huge hill, which save me for the rest of the run. I was very happy with my run.
Post race
Warm down:

ate some oranges, drank some gatorade

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sickness, I was coughing a lot! Helmet issues!

Event comments:

They had a lot of volunteers, course was well marked and fun! I will do this race again!

Great race, Carrie! I am sorry I missed meeting you. That was a real feat to drive and stay in a hotel and do the race while sick! At least this felt (at least to me) like a really challenging course, nice distances, even a meal and an award ceremony. Hope to meet you someday at another triathlon--I see you are doing Trail of Tears, do you live near Cape?

Good Job! Way to hang in there.

Let me tell you about our experience at the Comfort Inn. We were on the back side of the hotel and Sat. night when we were getting ready for bed, with the curtains open, my wife noticed a peeping tom in the backyard of the house opposite our room (324). If that wasn't bad enough, we hardly slept due to the party in the hallway that lasted from about 1am to 4am. I got up at 4:30. Still had fun though.

Good luck at the Trail of Tears tri. I was going to make that my first, but couldn't wait. Have fun.

I do live near cape, I work in cape and live in Jackson, town right outside of Cape. The park is kinda between both towns. I am still unsure if I am going to do Coors light, I want to but my knee is giving me a hard time. I might just swim, and run and let my sister in-law do the biking. Who knows, I hate to miss it since it is right here!

I used to work with a girl from Jackson, but have never been there.

Let us know how the race goes if you do it, and good luck with the knee.
