Planned on doing a swim/bike brick today, but woke up exhausted. I think I'll switch my day off. It's so damn hot here this week that running is tough, I'll have to be up before 6 to do anything.

Devon....I don't know what it is about HR, but I am not capable of running within ANY version of my HR zones. Never have been. I just go off of perceived effort. There is clearly a HR (WELL above any calculated zone) that is too high for me, and I work to avoid that.

Being back at my cottage in michigan and working out at the places where I prepped for IMMT has been kind of neat. Today I walked/ran for sixty minutes on the field where I did most of my run training last summer. The last time I had stepped foot on the field, I had ran 17 miles after biking 60 miles... with the last two hours in almost total darkness (so I'd be ready to run in the dark). So it was a little sobering to be only running for 60 minutes in 1 minute run/4 minute walk intervals. But what it filled me with was a sense of pride in what I had accomplished and the confidence that even though the road back would be tough - I knew I could do it having done it before...

This is my motivational tool for you. What's your goal for the end of July? It doesn't have to be pounds if the issues are more food/eating....you've lost the weight, you've gained it....you know what you need to do....tell me what you know you CAN do and I'll send you a six pack if you do it.

Sandi - For me - it's gotta be a trade so that we both benefit. Right now - I need to work out and eat well... I'm not sure that that means - but I've got to stop the binging and the mixed workouts... Let me give it some thought. What would you do to earn a six pack from Boston?

On the advice of my coach - I upped my milage for my long ride from 35 to 50 this week... Having missed the last two long rides, the 3:30 hours it took me was incredibly hard. This was my longest ride this year and just proved how big the mental part of tri is. 15 miles into the ride - my legs were telling me they were done but I just gutted it out. When I got home - I felt like I had accomplished something. That's something I've been missing - that feeling like I had done something worthwhile. I'm hoping to keep these workouts going....

BTW not sure if you noticed, but you averaged nearly 17mph, on a very hilly course, over 56 miles. AFTER 41 minutes of swimming. To me this is herculean!

Happy Monday BDASers! For the past couple weeks/months, I've been asleep at the switch but let's get back to business and set some goals for the week. Remember to give yourself a carrot (Two Hearted Ale from Bells) and a stick (a Coors Light Penalty to keep you motivated (and god knows, I need all the motivation I can get right now!

DQ Goals for the week:

4 swims, 4 bikes including a 55 miler), 2 runs, 1 aqua jog and 1 walk
PT Exercises everyday for at least 10 minutes
ROlling and icing post workouts at 1x at night
Keep calories under limit in order to drop 2 lbs.
Sign onto BT everyday

Carrot = try two beers each night/stick = Coors light penalty during next weeks Nascar race

Here is my question - How can I use my Garmin 910 to improve my swim times? Does anyone know a guide I could to set up my watch in order to give me some metrics that would help me analyze my stroke. Right now, I'm swimming at a pace of 2:12x100 and I know I have room for improvement. Since it's summer, I'm doing most of my swims in a lake.

Also - how can I improve it's accuracy. I've heard of some people placing the watch in their swim cap but I still get the lost signal warning.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Dave- sounds like a good plan for the week.

I have a dilemma - I am trying to decide if I should race Xterra USA champs merely because I qualified. the bike is brutal though and I have never done anything nearly that hard. So, do I sign up and hope I figure out how to climb 3400ft in the next 2.5 months?

I can't decide.

Hey, I got 2nd in my age in the Aquabike out of 2 in my age group (missed first by 2 minutes). It counts!! Take it!! I got a plaque for crying out loud! Bwahahaha! Give it a shot, what the heck do you have to lose?! Go for it!! Then next year when you qualify again you'll have had prior experience to kick a$$ even more! Go, girl!!!

Dave, if I were you I would look into a Finis tempo trainer. Fantastic piece of gear that will improve your stroke cadence and pace all around. Should be able to track one down on Amazon or other swim store.

Hope everyone had a good weekend, just starting mine off. Got off work early last night, decided to head down to one of the other casinos in town with $100. Was up a few hundred counting cards, well on my way to putting a nice dent in my next bike purchase. Played into a strong count, and got crushed.

Oh well, only $100. Was fun while it lasted though. Lol.

Does the 910 have a metronome? I know the 920 and Fenix3 do. You could use that to increase your swim cadence. I know it's not available in the menu for swimming on my fenix3, but to try it out, you could just set it to run, with the metronome where you want it.

Personally, I have only seen speed gains in the pool with technique improvement. Streamlined body will do more than almost anything else. Neutral head position, good rotation and your feet straight behind you.

Check-in It's been a few days since check-in. The weekend was crappy, so I stayed inside and used a stationary bike. I was a puddle of sweat when I was done, so I think I'm accomplishing something. Today was a long swim and it felt great. I didn't want to do it, but damn it went well once I got in. It's the farthest I've gone (2200yds) and it was all pretty much without rest. I love that the swim is coming around. It's almost like following a training plan will help you get better or something...

Jenn Good job with the race!

Race Season Who else has some races coming up?

Next week I'm going to the beach on vacation next week and I'm looking forward to morning runs and bike rides on the boardwalk. I'm not sure when that became my idea of a vacation, but oh well....

I think I have appeased the rain gods somehow. Lately, every time I want to go for a ride, even if the forecast says it is going to rain and the sky looks like it is about to dump buckets on me, I've managed to get in my ride. Maybe the rain gods like new bikes too! Anyway, it has been pretty busy around here lately--my oly plan is serious! I knew that before, but now that I'm in the middle of week two, it is real to me. This morning was a ride and weight workout (218 & 219/400).

Just reserved a hotel room for my tri in two weeks. Question for the group: Do you all bring your bikes inside the hotel with you, or leave them in the car? I booked a nice hotel in a sorta run down city, so I was planning to carry mine into the room. Anyone ever have a hotel have a problem with this?

Sprints are a great way to keep motivated, having an event on the calendar keeps me from slacking off too much

Speaking of sprints, on Saturday I had my first tri of the season with a fun local sprint. Here is the race report. A few minutes slower than last year however my training volume has been lower due to the lingering PF in my right foot. I still had fun and there was a little bit of competition with a couple of co-workers. My other recent adventures include a 2 mile paddle on my SUP escorting and navigating a group of swimmers out to Avila Rock. Conditions were great and it was nice to get out on the water and help my fellow swimmers.
