Thanks all for your kind messages regarding my 1/2 mary in Korea! Similar to my PR in November for the NYC Marathon, I now believe that good nutrition during the races has been a key element to be able to sustain a hard pace without major cramping. On both races I was taking 1 gel every 30 minutes, similar to an IM race. Any thoughts?

Also thanks Mitch for posting the cool article about the Marathon des Sables which I will be doing in exactly 1 year. It will be very interesting to see how Ironman training/conditioning (from IM Arizona mid November) carries forward to a whole different type of training, more in line with what Mark Z is going through for his upcoming ultra. Just worried about how long will it take me to recover from that IM and that I don't get any injuries (as some of you are unfortunately experiencing).

Mark H, laughing at your comment and also because next month I will be attending again the Brussels Seafood Show, and guess what? two days latet running the Dusseldorf Marathon which is just 2hrs away by train :-)

Jim, congrats on your race and no, I ended up not running the Guatemala City 10k at night to spend some quality family time before leaving for Korea the next day.

Could someone please add me to the April challenge with 2 workouts, 1 90 min drainer yesterday and 1 hr OWS today, thanks

It was a really nice day out today so after a few hours at the ski hill I got that new bike out for a first ride. I fought the wind most of the ride and it was a little chilly but none the less a good 1:19 ride.

Nice run picture Joe! I wish I had such scenery --wow!

Dennis- I wonder what you are eating. I know I'm enjoying pies, ice cream, beers. I'm just glad I'm not gaining weight.

My 2nd tri, first of this year, is in 2 weeks. I'm getting excited and nervous and all the other good things that go along with racing. I'm also driving my bf bonkers with too many conversations about run, bike, swim, transition....

Joe, love the scenery! Nothing like trail runs, they add another dimension to running, vertical!

Gabe, you and your Marathons, IMs and ultras... my god, how do you juggle all that plus your busy work schedule and family??? You are a star!

I have a 50k trail ultra in 2 weeks and 100k Kokoda Challenge in July.

I have attached a picture from this morning's run.

2hrs 20min on the trainer this morning (TR Meteorite - 3x20' over unders with valleys at 80% FTP and Peaks at 95-100% FTP). Workout was really four intervals but ran out of time and wanted to be done to have breakfast with my 5 year old whie my wife slept in. It's the little things that allow us the time to pursue our endurance endeavors.

Thought I might should follow up with what I decided about a training plan.
I found a walk-to-run program on this site that looks very doable, so I started it this last week. The main reason I chose it over C25K was because it starts with just walking, and once you start running, the timing of intervals is more flexible. It'll be another three weeks before I can get points with it, though.

Adding yesterday's bike.

Mark, thanks for the comment, but I'm just following your steps, you did an IM before me and very soon an ultra as well :-;  BTW, that is a great pic, seems like you are in total control in the wilderness!

Joe, very cool pics from your Sedona trip, make you want to be there

Adding me back in + 16mile run w/ lots of climbs yesterday + 1hr drainer today (Good Friday off for some quality family time)

For my upcoming race schedule:  Dusseldorf Marathon on April 26 (Yes Mark H, conveniently 2 days after the European Seafood Show :-), the Challenge Roth on July 12 (full IM distance tri and very well known outside of the US), Berlin Marathon Sept 15 (got in but doubting this one since I then have Ironman Arizona on Nov. 15)

1hr ride today, just a scenic beach patrol.
I actually initiated a sea rescue after seeing a poor kayaker attempting to get back on his boat while battling a high surf. Rescue boat and helicopter arrived minutes after I alerted the surf rescue. Few points for me

Ellen,
You should log the walks in your workout log. It will show you where you started when you start to look back in a few months. I know it really encouraged me when I saw the improvement from the slow walking and the walk/run (which I totally count as running!). Any time I'm running more than 50% of the time then I count that as running. I still have long runs that have 2 minute walk breaks.

Thanks,
Beth

Adding 30 minute run yesterday and 31 minute run this morning. I basically took the last 3 months off from running to focus more on swimming and biking over the winter. It was good to get back out on the road but I'm definitely feeling the time off. Planning to build very slowly over the next few weeks.

My race schedule for the summer:

- 5/17 - Sudbury sprint tri (400yd pool swim, 7mi bike, 2.3mi run) - quick race to knock the rust off
- 6/28 - Cohasset sprint- this is a really popular local race that sells out every year. Excited for my first time.
- 7/12 or 7/26 - still deciding between two local Oly's
- 8/16 - Timberman sprint in NH
- 9/6 - Big George HIM in Lake George, NY

I'll probably throw in a few running events over the summer as well.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
