So they've release more information. Evidently the flooding had broken a sewer line and untreated sewage has been released into the lake. I think I'm going to take your advice and show up and do it. But since I'll be treating it more like a training day can I go back to regularly scheduled training? I normally take some extra rest in the week or 2 leading up to a race. Thinking since my better half is out of town I can hit the am swim workout without waking him up and do a double work out day without catching grief

I would take the day after off, or swim. Since it is a sprint you can go back at it but take it light the week after. You could also focus that week on swimming (good news for you).

short 30min swim yesterday.

Feeling burnt out this week. Not overtraining just overloaded on all fronts it seems. Went for a "ride" tonight, left my phone/gps in my back pocket so I wasnt watching my speed, heart rate, cadence or even how long I was out. Came back as it was starting to get a little dark. 70min ride, just over 33km.

You should consider switching to a harmonica, a piano isnt really a musical instrument to travel with, especially when running.

Normally with my musical talent for portability, I choose a kazoo. Today was a piano day. I think it may have been a grand piano at that!

4 mile run yesterday afternoon and an hour on Zwift this morning (in reverse).

They have added functionality to ride the course in either direction. This morning rode it in reverse and was lucky enough to have the green (sprint) and orange (lap) jerseys at the same time! I was close on the polka dot (mountain) jersey. Not long after the below photo a much stronger rider showed up and my fun was over.

1:06:45 ride. It was a horrible ride. Into the wind on the way out. Then the chain guard broke on my rear derailer. Then I took a turn around too sharply and fell into a dirt mound in front of a group of tourists. I suppose they came here to see something, I suspect they didn't expect to see me in a low speed crash.

To make up for a lack of swimming in tomorrow's race I drove an hour each way and did an open water swim with my triclub this am. I am not as nervous about tomorrow's race. I think even if I get the splits I'm looking for it won't really count but it will be a good indicator of my run improvement. So I'm really embracing your suggestion and looking at it as just a serious training day.

Originally posted by dcon My apologies for being mostly missing during the month of May. I started my bike tour of Japan as planned on May 10. I ended up with 22 days in May and a total of 114 hours of training logged. That is far and away my best month ever. Of course almost all of it is cycling. To date on the tour, including a ride on June 1, we have ridden 2075 km and climbed 18,790 meters. We have been getting mostly great weather. Once we are done I will find some way to share highlights and photos. I am doing some updates on Facebook and if anyone is interested, send me friend request (Dan Conway in Sendai, Japan) or pm me your iFacebook ID. I will try to send a few more updates in the next couple of weeks and should be back to normal in mid-June.

Hey Dan, I have seen some of your pics on FB and what an amazing experience through some beautiful areas in Japan.  Keep up the great riding!

Updating my totals including today a 3:30 drainer/Zwift workout + 15 mile brick run (I was out of energy for the last 5 miles)

A funny thing happened a couple of days with the Zwift workout updates that go into Strava, where a friend contacted me to ask where the hell I was since he was seeing a map with names like Watopia and Numbuko.  We had a good laugh when I explained it was the virtual world of Zwift.

Gabe similar experience for me with zwift. I have a triathlon friend who travels a lot - so I was used to seeing him train in exotic locales. One day I see him riding on an island in the South Pacific, then I notice a former member of our group was riding the same route on the island....I was like wow - what are the odds I know two people training a bike on this South Pacific island. I felt really silly when I learned about zwift and realized my friend was still in Wisconsin....

I need some help. My race is on Sunday (sprint) and it's supposed to be open water swim. Well with all the flooding there's too much water and that brings debre. Until further notice all the lakes are closed including the 1 we're supposed to race on. The race just posted that they are looking to turn it into a run bike run. Now given that the open water swim is really my favorite part what recourse do I have? Do I just go along with the race and do my best at 2x running (I hate running!) or is there an option to move my race entry to their next race which is about the same race but in July?

Thanks,
Beth

Hey Beth:

I have done many Dus and to be frank, they hurt (but I'm a bit of a sadist). As much as Mitch's advice is correct, I have found it virtually impossible to negative split the second run. It is key to hold back on the first run, but then the bike will take something or a lot out of you. There's a lot of real muscle confusion here as the bike legs aren't typically used to tired running legs. If you had the time, I'd suggests practicing run-bike-run to get the feeling. If you can't defer, I'd say go for it. People don't give Dus the props they deserve - it is a hard race and you will undoubtedly feel the same sense of accomplishment as a tri - you just may not like it a lot

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
