Hello BT,

Due to the location where I live, it looks like the available races nearby are all military sponsored.

I'm only been a triathlete for less than a year and I'm a civilian. Could your share your experience as civilian participant in military sponsored race?
(,ease of getting on base, "friendliness", organized or not, etc.)

Thank you.

Phebes, the Jay Benson Tri in Albuquerque was on the base for several years.  It was actually really nice because they were able to control the traffic better and the pool was great! They would get name, date of birth and SSN (if I remember correctly) for each participant and also for any one that wanted to go watch. They asked for this info several weeks in advance. Unfortunately in 2013 after the Boston bombing they could not use the base any more.

If you have races that are open to civillians but are on base I would say go for it!

I'll definitely get / inquire about the pass ahead of time since I don't have a friend that could sponsor me ( none of my friends are doing triathlons).

This was our Age Group Team's suit for 2014 Worlds. Edmonton is a major military city and 2014 was the 100th Anniversary of the PPCLI.

As a former military member and current military spouse, I can tell you that you have nothing to worry about. Most of the "base" races I've done are even friendlier than off base triathlons. The military community supports everyone. Sure there will be idiots but you'll get that anywhere. Check the rules for getting on base, as stated earlier. Usually they know that the race is on so the rules are different, it is never a problem though.

They offered the open back style with unexamined legs for women who prefer that style. ZeroD makes one in plain colours.

As a former Marine I can say, without hesitation, it's the military, what could possibly go wrong?

Let’s face it, triathloning can be expensive. However, there are many ways for the frugal triathlete to pay for equipment, training, travel, and race entry fees without going broke.
