Subject: Training and Thai Chi
Has anyone looked at incorporating Thai Chi into their training for improving performance or overall health?

A massage therapist suggested it to me and wanted to get some of your thoughts. Overall I know it can't hurt, but curious about improvements.

Thanks!
Cindy

Anytime I hear Thai Chi I get a chuckle because it reminds me of the movie Vision Quest.

Sorry that doesn't answer your question but that's all I got.

You might want to read "Chi Running" by Danny Dreyer if this interests you. It's a fairly popular running philosophy which claims Tai Chi as foundational to its movements.

In my opinion, Thai Chi and other martial arts are great for overall health (independent of triathlon training) and they can teach you a lot about your personal form and efficiency of movement. While these lessons a great and can carry over into many other athletic pursuits, I wouldn't try to draw any strong correlations between Thai Chi and Triathlons. In other words, if you're primary goal is to improve your triathlon training, I wouldn't recommend adding Thai Chi to your training. If you primary goal is to improve overall health and well being, then go for it!

That was my thought, but wanted to enlist the thoughts of others who are by far more experienced than myself. Thanks!

The three disciplines of triathlon are steeped in rhythm. Think of watching a well-trained swimmer, gliding smoothly down the lane, arms moving like clockwork, breathing every third stoke.

No matter what technique you use, running still remains a sport that requires “pain and suffering.” Technique-only training will not make you a fast runner if you don’t practice to be one.

Running does not cause injury. Poor running form does. Running is more enjoyable, and safer if you know what you’re doing. And yes, even old dogs can learn new tricks.
