Subject: Sprint Breakfast
Hello fellow BT's, I have a dumb question, I have my first Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, Im not a breakfast person I can do with just 2 cups of coffee, but for a tri, even a sprint Im sure an empty gas tank is not the way to go. What would you suggest would be a good light breakfast for a Sprint Tri?

Thanks in advance for the help!

My go-to breakfast before events is a Clif bar.

Banana? My personal favorite is home made oatmeal. Its easy to change up and filling.

I usually go with 1/2 peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat about 2hrs before race time followed by 1/2 banana 30min later. That being said, this is likely a very individual thing. Good luck and enjoy!

Two packs of a quality oatmeal and a cup of coffee about 2.5 hours before. Maybe a clif bar closer to the start if I feel i need it.

The same breakfast you typically have before a really hard workout.

Generally 1-2 oat or brown rice based energy or granola bars and a cup of coffee. Just enough to have a little in the tank so I don't feel hungry before the start or during the race. Wheat and dairy generally don't sit well before a run or race (though I eat them at other times) so I avoid them on race morning. It's the same thing I eat before a longer or harder early AM workout.

+1. I like a peanut butter and banana sandwich with a cup of coffee. But I agree and know from experience that trying new things can go badly (luckily mine was just a training run).

Good luck on Sunday!

After a few stomach issues at my last half marathon, I did some experimenting, which I think everyone as an individual needs to do. What works for me may NOT work for you.

What wound up working for me on my first full, was carb loading for the 3 days leading up to the race (about 75% complex carbs, the rest split between protein and fat), then a VERY light breakfast on race day...A Clif bar and a banana, with a gu at the top of every hour during the event. Since a Sprint Tri is more or less equivalent to a half marathon in length (not necessarily miles, but duration), you should be able to complete it without a lot of fuel in your gut, provided you prepare your body leading up to it.

Oatmeal and a banana always worked fine for me. I've upped my game a little recently, so now I eat a bowl of oatmeal when I get up, drink a smoothie on the way to the venue (currently banana/rhubarb/blueberry/chard/beet/chia is my go-to) and pack a banana in case I need it. Espresso before I leave the house. Energy gel w/caffeine 15 minutes before race start.

Don't over think it… Eat the way you would normally do, but make sure you drink more liquids the days before the race. For breakfast, I would have a cup of coffee and a bagel (or a piece of bread) with Nutella. That's no different than any other day btw...

If you typically do a hard workout, bricks etc., without much food if any, then a sprint is fine to mirror regarding your nutrition.

If you're concerned you could have issues with energy, bring a small amount of whatever nutrition works for you typically and keep it on the bike and/or in transition...

Honestly I think you run the risk of feeling worse trying something new on race day vs. going with what you've done in the past.  Even if no nutrition before workouts isn't a good idea, at least it's something you're familiar with.

If you choose to start doing longer distances, you should work on pre-workout nutrition plans to see what works and what doesn't.  Also for the long course stuff you'll need to work on a nutrition plan during the race but that's a different subject..

Case in point, several people have recommended bananas, which for most is fine.  However I've had them settle like iron bars a few times waiting around transition nibbling pre-race.. I always eat the same breakfast for workouts or races however the longer wait periods hanging around transition waiting to head to the water has gotten me...

Good luck...

That's what I eat pre-race, it's been working so far!

I'd also like to "2nd" what audiojan said: "make sure you drink more liquids the days before the race".
Getting to be well hydrated on race day starts days in advance.
