Subject: trying to pick 1st tri
Hi all, I am trying to decide between the Luray Sprint (mid May) and Kinetic Sprint (late April) for my first sprint triathlon. Anyone who has done either (or both) have any recommendations, especially for someone who is doing their first?

I've read, I think on this site, that the Kinetic was cold and miserable this year, but also read that the bike course for Luray is fairly hilly and challenging.

Also factoring in when I'd need to start the 16-week couch-to-sprint... for the April one, I'd need to start 1/2, the May one, 1/22. Jan-Apr training vs. Feb-May. The latter sure seems like it would be warmer.

Hi Tim,

I am new here and I am just starting Tri so my advices may not be good.
But as you live in VA like me I thought you might be interested by the following Sprint tri:

- April 2007: Worldgate Sport&Health Spint Tri (300yd pool swim, 18mi bike on W&OD, and 2.9mi run)
- May 2007: Virginia Run Sprint Triathlon (250 meter pool swim, 12 mile bike, 5k run )

I plan to do both.

Then I might do a OLY if I feel like it.
I found that one:
- June 2007: Olympic - Lake Montclair Triathlon ( 1 mile lake swim, 24 mile bike, 10k run )
At this time of the year, the temperature should be decent for lake swimming. Not sure if a wet suit would be required though.

Hope this help.

I did Virginia Run this year and I'd definitely recommend it. Very, very well organized and a lot of fun. Personally, I'm just leery of April races cause the weather can still be so screwy that time of year and when the weather is cold & miserable, then I'm miserable.

thanks for the tips!! For some reason, I want to do something with a longer pool swim. I have no idea why, since right now I can swim about 75m before I have to stop to take a break. I feel like I'm "wimping out" or something if I do a pool swim.

But that might be a good way to break into this. Hmmm... food for thought.

Agreed on the April weather. It could be 70 or 40.

I was also trying to get my wife to tri, actually, the worldgate one, since she is really adverse to OW swimming.

Question about the pool swim. Do they set up a 50 meter course with bouys to swim around continuously or can you do flip turns?

At Virginia Run, it was a 25 meter "snake swim" setup with lane lines - you'd do an out/back, duck under the lane line and go out/back on the next lane until you'd done the 250. Flip turns were allowed at the wall. (I know of at least one pool swim mini-tri that did *not* allow flip turns.)

There's a pool swim sprint in Richmond in the spring: Powersprint Tri (check out www.richmondmultisports.com).  It's a 400 meter pool, 20k bike, 5k run.  The pool swim is set up so that you swim up and down a lane, then go under the lane lines to the next lane, swim up and down, etc.  The pool swim can be chaotic, but it's a good race.

Yep.  It was my first tri last year.  The pool swim can be a little chaotic as people have a hard time estimating their swim time. It was also a little chilly going out on the bike.  The bike course is fun - there's a pretty big hill about halfway through.  The run is mostly flat with some small hills.  It's a good tri and the group that organizes it is great.
