Plan....get in a longer session on the trainer.......

Goal....a little more intensity than in most recent sessions.....

Plan....managed 30 minutes; left knee cooperated for the most part; adjusted the seat a little more

Goal...increased intensity; got my HR up as I wanted;

Still "miles" to go on my trainer sessions......

Today I ran/ walked 2.8 miles around our downtown Riverwalk. This was followed by a roughly two hour brunch at the local brewpub. Coconut Chocolate Porter, IPA, and a "Wee Heavy" rounded out the meal. Thinking a nap would be in order!

Friday I got in an hour ride outside with my husband. It was a little chilly but doable. In the 50's, it was great to not be in the trainer. I had a good ride 15 miles in just over an hour, No yoga though.
Saturday 1 hour long on the trainer with my husband, my legs and seat were feeling the miles. I got in 44 miles for the week. 3 days of riding.
Sunday I got in 40 minutes of swim with my boys. 750 yards. I got in 2500 yd for the week. Then I jogged/walked 2 miles in 34 minutes for a total of 4.4 miles for the week. I wanted to get in more strength training but ran out of steam.
Now to start off the week with more great training.

Hello all,

Just checking in to see how everyone's doing. The weather forecast for today is 72 F which is crazy for Colorado in February. Assuming the wind isn't too strong this afternoon, I'm planning on going for a ride outdoors. Hope that you all have a great weekend (training or otherwise).

Here's a "fun" motivator. Count the # of weeks until your first event/ race/ challenge for the year.

For me, I'm at T- 12 weeks until Ordinary Mortals, a reverse order sprint triathlon in May!

16 weeks until my first Sprint on June 12!!!

Of course I got sick AGAIN last weekend so I only got to the gym once this week. Today is homework day then out of town the rest of the weekend.

My goal this coming week is to get back into the gym regularly and to keep on track with eating healthy and less calories!

I have a fairly athletic background, playing college football and love exercising. I began pushing my limits a few years back training and racing several 5/10k and half marathons. Unfortunately as I trained for a full marathon I over trained and tore a tendon in my knee and developed tendinitis and have early stage arthritis too (I'm only 25). I've slowly worked and rehabbed back dealing with long term it band issues as well.

So although I've consistently lifted weights my cardio and aerobic training is rookie status. I would like to race in a mini sprint or sprint tri in August. Not to compete, just accomplish my goal of completing a triathlon (sprint). Can you guys give me any advice and programs for training?? I've had a hard time finding beginner programs

To add to my last post of needing guidance on a program, I am already doing majority of anaerobic training at the gym, but I haven't even gone for a jog in years let alone aerobic focused exercise.

BT has a number of beginner training programs you could take a look at.  Sort on the distance (Sprint) and the membership level (Free) and take a look at each one listed.  The Michael Pate's Total Sprint actually starts with very low volume and walking and builds to doing a sprint in 22 weeks. 

The others whether is 2x or 3x for each discipline per week state a minimum base level.  But if one sounds good to you then use it and adjust the durations to build upon.

Remember that as you build in the cardio volume you will likely have to compensate by lifting less, especially the legs to avoid overtaxing them.  But you are young and everyone responds to stresses differently.

Oh, not sure what kind of running shoes you tend to wear, but max cushioned shoes (e.g. Altra, Hoka) can help a lot with reducing the impact stresses of running on the knees.

How has everyone been, its been a bit since I dropped in.  Work has been great for us this year and has taken all of my time and the kids swim meets will be moderating in frequency a bit as the YMCA states have pasted and only my son has Senior champs next weekend.  But I can no longer delay getting the training going.  The "fun" motivator, has to get serious with my sprint race in 15 weeks from today.  I built the training plan and will be importing it into my log later today.

Hit and miss on training since the middle of last week; traveled to see daughter and son in law as well as the "grand dogs"..... . Got a couple walks in; cranky legs and knees plus a door install project impacted any training activities; travel day today and back at it tomorrow.

Got in 40 minutes total today on bike trainer and treadmill (20 mins each); laying off Sunday and Monday made it hard to get going this morning; trainer ride while "easy" was still a challenge......ugh......back to the pool in the morning.

I'm going to begin training for my first race in December. I'm doing it to get in shape and lose some weight. However, the problem is that I currently can't run, so I'm getting a friend to join my "team" and take on the running portion. I'm looking for some training plans that incorporate the biking and swimming portions. Not all of the methods have to be on bike or in the water. Do you have any pointers, or know where I can get some? Thanks.

Hi Ted and all the others in this group,

I would love to join. I will do my first ever sprint triathlon July 17th.

PERSONAL; I am 34 years old and live in the Netherlands. My boyfriend and I do not live together officially but are together almost always. He is a runner (already 7 marathons) and he trained for a HIM once but was never able to start the race he trained for because it was cancelled because of a hurricane and he never signed up for another.

MY STORY: I was never into sports as a child. Then in 2011 I was invited to do a 10 miles run for charity. First weeks training went wel and I actually liked it. Then I did not train at all anymore but still finished the race although I went over time limit. Year after that same race about same story although I did train some more. Took about 20 minutes off my time from the year before but still outside time limit.
I tried a couple of times to take up running again but it did not stick. Last year I joined a online community of sporting women and really got inspired by their efforts to do their first triathlons. I joined BT and started the 22 sprint training plan but did not stick to it. But this time I did not stop training. I switch from public transportation to get to work to biking everywhere and I hit the pool at least once a week seeing great progress.

PREVIOUS RACES: 2011 10 miles outside time limit. 2012 10 miles out side time limit. 2015 5 kilometer run 38,5 minutes. 2015 7 km obstacle run 2 hours 13 minutes. 2015 5 km run 37.43 minutes. 2016 10 km run 1 hour 23 minutes. (i know i am not fast and that is a real struggle because i really want to win)

PLANS FOR 2016: I created my own training plan by combining the 20 week run focused sprint plan with the couch to 5 kilometer plan. I did that because I did no specific run training for about 4 years and I really want to get better at running. This time I will stick to this plan.

RACES 2016: April 30th 7k obstacle run. July 17 sprint triathlon. September 10th mini sprint triathlon.

I will now read all your previous posts to see the valuable information that is already here and the ask questions. Feel free to ask me any question or to give feedback on what I already wrote.

Welcome gbwilliamsjr & wnorth, Jbrewster,and Marlene,

I would say for the brand newbies that the training programs on BT on good. I was brand new to swimming, cycling, and running last year. For me the commitment of training to see if I can do this,if I have the inner strength to compete and accomplish my goals that is what keeps me working out.

I have been steadily training. I missed my weights and yoga this week. That is usually what goes when life gets crazy. Scouts, birthday parties, and soccer for my children.

I am excited I just signed up with the local Triathlon group to do an all day camp. I did it last year and was pushed so much. I learned a lot and it felt great to be around all of the triathletes some that had been training and competing for over 11 years. I was happy I could walk when I was done.

Yesterday, I got in the pool and after doing some kick board work to warm up I noticed the pool was almost empty. I have a home court advantage if you will on my sprint race in April. It is at my YMCA. I got out and walked around to the beginning and swam the lengths of the pool as if in competition. I miss counted and stopped 25 yards short of my 300 yard race amount. It felt good to practice and realize my weaknesses.


I just finished an hour on the trainer riding next to my husband who was doing a FTP test on Zwift. I upped my speed and gears to match as best as possible with his program. I completed 16.31 in 1 hour 7 minutes.

I have a hike on Saturday with scouts, then back in the pool on Sunday and a Run.

Make it great.

If this group is still open, I would like to join. I have done a handful of Sprints, but the last two seasons have been a bit rough. A mix of life changes and training friends moving out of state have made things difficult. This year though, I am motivated to get back to how I trained when I started the sport 5 years ago. Hoping a renewed sense of community can help keep me engaged in 2016.
