I am riding a five year old Kona King Zing. It has been a great bike and I have only done a few routine replacement. The cassette is a 10 gear 11/25. I am thinking about a change to an 11 gear 11/28. I assume that means new cassette, derailleur, rear hub and chain. Anything else I am missing? BTW - running all Ultegra now so I would likely stay at that level for the replacements.

Maybe an overriding question. Is it worth spending that much money (especially since I would have to pay someone to do the work) rather than just buy a new road bike?

What do you think?

New shifters as well.
If you do the back wheel , you need to do front so add another derailleur. New hubs will require a wheel rebuild
Buying parts gets expensive. Sometimes they come so cheap on a new bike, it's not that much more expensive.

Go to chainreactioncycles and workout the price of it all. Do a mechanical and DI2 version for hoots.

why 11 speed ?

if you want the 28, just put a new cassette on. Ultegra 6700 derailleur will handle the 28

also if you are gearing up for a hilly race, toss in a compact crank. easy to install.

Agree with above...not sure the extra gear is worth all that cost.

If it's just an excuse to buy a new bike, then I'm all for it.

Seems more worth it to get new bike with 105 11 speed if you are dying for another gear, lots of affordable options with that spec.

As said above, you could stay 10 speed and just get a 11-28 cassette. Easy as pie.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

Bike upgrades to gain speed: better wheelsets, a tri-bike, road bike with aerobars, even getting rid of those love handles before getting that lighter bike.
