Pre-race routine:

Been rehabbing hamstring and hip stabilizer injury since the end of December, while training for LA Marathon on 3/19. Decided to do this race as part of a 4-man Grandmaster Division team with my running club, knowing I'm not trained for this distance and that I'd potentially have to hold back to protect the hammie.

Carpooled with three other team members. Light rain when we arrived. Did packet pickup, a lot of stretching around the injury, and some light warmup.
Event warmup:

Just enough striders to make sure I could feasibly hold something around 7:00/mile. My prediction was just over 35 mins (my PR for 8K...run a number of years ago...was more like 34:30).

Comments:

Went about as well as I could expect on lots of miles, but almost zero speed work, since the end of December. First mile had a lot of downhill, so I probably went out too fast (6:54), but I did come back with a 6:42 last mile. I was the slowest of the four guys on my team, but not by a whole lot. Way back in my AG, though.

Team finished 2nd (behind a club that has a membership of a lot of elite and former elite runners), so I got a medal out of the event, as one of the 4 scorers for our team.
What would you do differently?:

Not strain my TLF muscle and hamstring at the end of December.
Post race
Warm down:

Ridiculously extravagant post-race food court. I stayed away from the worst choices...stuck to a couple cookies and a lot of good coffee. Plenty of stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hamstring strain. No danger of blowing up, really, but I had to hold back, especially on the long downhill in mile 4.

Event comments:

This is a venerable race that attracts a lot of local runners and walkers along with a lot of very fast runners from across the region. Really amazing post-race "food court" for registered runners.
