Hello All,
I am new to this sport and have never competed in a triathalon. I am 26 years old and have a lovely wife. I have been training hard in strength, running and some swimming and want to start competing in Tris. My goal is to be able to keep up a heavy weight lifting regiment while training in the other areas.

You might find that you need to decrease the weight that you are lifting when you start to cross train. You don't want to over work those muscles and risk injury. This site has a great routine for adding lifting to your tri training schedule!

Agree about the heavy lifting. I WAS a heavy lifter until I starting tri-training. Now, 2-3 times a week with medium weights to keep my strenght up. Your muscles will be so broken down and tired you won't complete your tri training and/or recovery completely. My 2 cents....

Welcome to the site. I am taking everyones advise on this one. I am used to a heavy lifting routine when I work out. Since I will be cross training I am going more for stamina than heavy.

Your weight training is probably going to have to change. When I got started, I was doing 4 sets of 10 reps with 225 pounds on the bench press (not too bad for an almost 40 year old guy). As I got more into the tri training, I decreased my weights and increased my reps. Unless you have been working out anaerobically already, you'll probably find yourself short-winded. Your body uses oxygen differently when lifting weights than it will when doing endurance exercises. In order to help me to be able to use oxygen more efficiently, I had to switch to the endurance type of weight lifting. I'm still not good at it, but it is helping and I am getting better.
