Extreme Veteran 484 McHenry, IL | Subject: RE: IM Wisconsin Finishing Shirt - For Real? No, those aren't the shirts the finishers got. Those aren't for sale. But, selling IM "finisher" gear online is nothing new. The day after every IM they put out a bunch of finisher stuff in the store at the expo, and then proceed to sell the same stuff online. Anyone can buy it. You're right...that shirt is awful. I didn't check out the finisher garb at the expo this year. Maybe this one was there and it's now on the online "clearance" rack. -Steve Edited by Steve in IL 2006-09-19 5:22 PM |

Winners trophies, too. For instance, you're talking to the All-Texas Invitational Open Division Bare-Knuckle Champion... as well as the St. Mary's Middle School Women's Dive Competion 1M Springboard 1st Place winner... but that one was on discount because it was already engraved bts Edited by Brett 2006-09-20 9:29 AM |

Lots of people wear "official" team jerseys. Are they unscrupulous because they're not really a member of the team? |

Do I get to keep my shirt? I'm not the t-shirt police, you can do whatever you want with your shirt. Gotcha used to run ads in surf magazines, depicting dorky looking people with the slogan, "If you don't surf, don't start." On the next page, they would have an ad of some guy shredding a wave with the caption, "If you do surf, don't stop." Surf Nazis, as some used to call them, promoting localism and discouraging new people from surfing. What good did it do Gotcha? Perry Ellis owns them now, which is about as corporate as you can get and about as polar opposite of what Gotcha used to espouse. Are we hypocritical if we bash someone for wearing these finisher shirts, if they never entered the race? Maybe. Do we dye our hair to hide the natural color? Do we have a house with a brick facade and vinyl siding everywhere else? Do we own laminate furniture that looks like solid wood? Is the message being sent, "look at the surface and ignore the rest" or are people just buying things they like and not concerning themselves about whether it will get someone else's undies in a bunch? |

Is that wrong? It reminds me everyday of my end goal.......... I have mixed feelings about this personally. First, do whatever you want. End the end it really doesn't matter what I think. With that said, I used to get pretty chapped when I would see someone rocking IM gear without actually doing the race. It's like false advertising as far as I was concerned. I paid my dues, I deserved it, you didn't. This past year I was in the expo in CdA and saw lots of families, where there was a guy doing the race, and with him was a mom, dad, grandma, cousins etc. They were all buying gear. They were soo excited for their relative/ friend that they wanted to share in the excitement too. I didn't see anything wrong with that and thought it was actually pretty cool. Since then I have relaxed my stance on it, but I still think it has everything to do with your intentions of having it. My daughter has an IM visor, but she doesn't tell people she did the race. Now the tattoo, that's a different story |

Veteran 164 Oak Lawn, IL | Subject: RE: IM Wisconsin Finishing Shirt - For Real? I have only had 2 people ask me about the hat. I never said i did it. I say someday. One guy asked me who had done the race and didnt say i shouldnt wear it. He just wished my luck on my goal. I did have another person who had not done a tri tell me I should not wear it unless I did it. |

If they are, ugh. This shouldn't be something that someone can just purchase. does that really matter? is it really THAT important? do we train to become competitive, achieve personal goals, health or to brag about it?To some degree yes, it does matter. If you want to take it to an extreme and say "it's just a tshirt" then thats true, but then how far can you take that line of reasoning? Does coming in first matter? Does racing really matter? Does training really matter? I started this thread because I thought it was possible to simply purchase a tshirt that tells people in the triathlon community that you have trained for and achieved a goal that many of us have. Now I know those aren't official IM finisher shirts. I just thought it was a little cheesy that some subset of people would want to purchase a shirt that makes a false claim that someone has gotten to one of the pinnacles of triathlon training and racing. But does it really matter. No, I guess not. |

To whom? Matters to some, not others. I could care less if people wear a finisher's shirt for a race they didn't do. Or wear an mDot tattoo without doing an IM (sorry Tom ). I might think somewhat less of them if I find they are just trying to impress others in this fashion. But really. Who are they hurting? Whose achievements are lessened by that? Not me. Not mine. Champion 6962 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: IM Wisconsin Finishing Shirt - For Real? Ok...I'm on the fence here (surprise surprise). I know what the IM MOO finishers shirt looks like because I have one. If I saw someone wearing that shirt, I would ask them if they did the race and chances are they didn't, so I would just leave it at that. I say they didn't do the race because I like the one I earned MUCH better than that ugly one they are selling. Also, when I did my last race before IM, I came in right behind a guy that had an M dot hat on. After the race, I asked him what IM he did and he said that IM MOO was going to be his first (so he became my target to beat). In the back of my head, I was like, "Hummm...wearing an IM hat but you haven't done one yet..." But it is a name brand just like Nike and the like. BUT...I also have to clairfy myself when I get asked about my Boston 06 Jacket. I get asked what my qualifiying time was and I didn't have one. Boston was my first Marathon because I got an Invitational Entry. But I didn't DARE wear any Boston stuff until after the race. Just like you don't wear the race shirt until after the race. If it's a goal (Kona hat), the AWESOME...use it to motivate you. If someone asks, say so. It doesn't matter what they/I think. But when it blatenly says Finisher and you didn't finish it...kinda poor form IMHO. But I'm still on my IM high, so you'll have to excuse me. |
