Subject: carbon frame or alum-carbon frame?

I am considering purchasing a new tri-bike, but I'm indecisive regarding frame material. I currently have a QR aluminum frame/carbon fork (quite stiff but I like it). I was thinking either a QR carbon or a Mercury Alum/carbon seat stays and fork. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons regarding those types of  frames. Is the ride drastically different? Are carbon frames easy to repair if scuffed? I want something durable.

Carbon is durable. What distance are you riding?

I don't think you can go wrong with either. The aluminum with the carbon seat stays and fork makes the carbon count.

I have a fully carbon frame on my road bike (I love it!!), but I think if I got a tri-bike, I would definitely consider the Alum/Carbon combo, especially when considering price.

I recently had to make this decision.  I rode a number of bikes that were full carbon and I still went with the mercury.  At my level of ability (19-20mph) I didn't feel a great deal of benefit from the full carbon frames.  Honestly it was kinda hard to tell the difference in ride quality.

I eventually went with the mercury for two reasons.  First and foremost, it fit me like a glove.  Second, all other things being equal I liked the look of the frame and the fact that I don't see dozens of them at every race.  The manufacturer (Argon18) has been great to deal with and my fitter loved to work with them.

I typically ride 35 miles on my rides, and plan on racing in sprints next summer. I have done some research, and in light of your responses will probably go with the Alum/Carbon frame. The Argon 18 mercury is pretty slick. I read the 2007 model was going to have a steeper seat tube too. There is a dealer right across the river in Windsor.

Thanks!
