Subject: Marathon 6 weeks after doing Ironman?
I'm going to run NYC Marathon next year (guaranteed entry). But, I also have in my sights the possibility of doing an Iron-distance event - Montreal Esprit.

The question is: Is this do-able? NYC is only about 6 weeks after the IM. I know it would have an effect on my training plan, but I'm more worried about recovery. I've never done an IM.

FYI - I wouldn't be "racing" either one of these - just finishing.

Another question: How soon after an IM can I get back into doing 20 mile runs? If it's longer than 3, maybe 4 weeks, then there's just no way I can do both.

Thanks for any advice.

Walt

I'm not going to tell you if you should do it or not, you have to be comfortable with your own training to do so.

However, with the IM 6 weeks before NY, you won't be recovered in time to do a 20 mile training run and you won't have to either. Your fitness will be up you just need to maintain it with some easy runs.

This is between you, your body and your training.  I am almost three weeks recovered from IMWI and I don't think I could manage a 10mile run (I could ride a century or swim a few miles, but not run).  This is how my body reacted (in large part because I am a horrible runner), but I had a friend who raced a 70.3 (just missed a championship slot) and three weeks later qualifed for Boston so to each there own.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

You are really tempting fate for an overuse injury if you are not a well seasoned athlete who has logged many many running miles. If you are a realitively new athlete and running is your weekness you are going to be doing well to walk the first two weeks after your IM race. Whatever you decide to do, be careful.

Sign up for both. If you do not feel you can complete the marathon on race day then skip the marathon. If you have a guaranteed entry it seems like you should sign up.

For the last two years I've done a hilly 15.5 mile race 4 weeks after IMCDA.  At 6 week post IM I have done a 2.5 hour (18ish mile) training run.  But I have not felt fully recovered from IM until 8 to 10 weeks out.  I know that this will be your first IM, will it be your first stand alone marathon?  If NYC is going to be your first marathon then I would have to say that you are setting yourself up for a bad virgin run.  Would I do a marathon 6 weeks after IM, heck no.

I kicked around the idea of doing the Wineglass Marathon this weekend three weeks out from IM WI. I feel fine and am going to either ride 100-112 miles Saturday or do three of the Adirondack High Peaks(hike about 12 miles) and then run 11 on Sunday(training for Jan Marathon). I have no residual muscle tiredness and had absolutely no soreness for Moo at all. I decided not to do the marathon because I would rather have a good race at the Army 10 Miler Oct 8th 4 weeks out from Moo. I will admit to crashing physically in the cold at Moo though and probably kind of underexerted myself for an IM distance event based on my training. I also may recover a little different from other people as I raced 2 half IMs 2 weeks apart earlier this year and did okay at both.
