Subject: WTC Ironman Registration Question
I spoke with someone yesterday who claims that the Gulf Coast Triathlon in Panama City in May allows participants entry into IMFL and IMWI. I know that this seems EXTREMELY far fetched but was wondering if anyone else has heard of this. This individual claims that he signed up for IMWI this year upon completing the Gulf Coast Triathlon.

Any insight? I ask because I did not get online in time to register for IMFL and that was to be my goal race for 2007. I'm not a big fan of asking people for money to support a cause when my real motivation is entry into the race so I will not consider a Community slot.

Some HIMs have entry slots for IM races.  They may distribute these in a roll-down fashion, raffle or just ask who wants them.  Eagleman, for instance, has IMFL, IMLP and IMMoo slots (along with some Kona slots).

So anyone who does that tri can register for one of those two IM's?  Or do you have to win a slot, like it's a qualifier?  If it is open entry and not a qualifier, are there other tris like this and where is there a list of them?

The slots are available to those who race.  They may either be "raffled" off to those interested or they can do them the same way they would 70.3 WC or Kona slots, i.e., by "roll-down".  Demand for the IM slots at these races can vary from a lot to very little.

As a follow-up example, at Eagleman last year there were 10 slots each for IMLP, IMWI & IMFL.  All the LPs went, but only 9 IMWI were taken and only 8 IMFL.

At Gulf Coast, in the past the day after the race they open registration for the events for which they have slots, and it's first come, first served.

Based on the link above to Ironman NA it appears that Florida 70.3 will offer 50 qualifying spots to IMFL but it says nothing about the Gulf Coast Half. I suppose that the GCH has not achieved 70.3 status so it is not a qualifier for the 2007 IMFL.

Does anyone know if you need to be a participant if they are offering the slots on a first come, first served basis the next day? My winter will be spent running the Tampa Marathon and, if all goes well, running Boston in April. There is no way I could compete effectively enough to qualify.

You must be a participant.

At Eagleman this year they did not offer them as a roll-down, they did them as a "raffle" where you throw your name in a box and they drew the slot "winners" during the awards ceremony. You still have to pay the entry fee though.

WTC does not (currently) run IMWI, IMFL, IMLP, IMCA, IMAZ ..... only IMKY .... IM North America does.

There is nothing wrong with asking for financial support to buy a community slot - the money is still being raised for a charity - you could just pony up the entry fee part of it yourself and raise the rest for the charity (you have to send two checks as it is), but if that is your feeling, stick to it. However, there are only 21 ICF slots left for Florida, and they will be gone in the next day or two probably.

I always thought IMNA was a subsidiary of WTC - I stand corrected.

I assume that there were several names drawn in which the participants declined - I would think it would take awhile to draw names to fill 50 slots for IMFL. Also, if Florida 70.3 awards the IMFL slots based on performance, I wonder how many individuals who qualify for the 70.3 Championship will forego IMFL (or vice versa) as they are literally a week or two away from each other.

Looking further, it appears that Florida 70.3 offers 50 spots for each IMNA race (FL, CdA, Canada, LP and WI). That is 250 slots. I have to think my chances of getting a spot in Florida are pretty good. Even if I do not, I am open to any of the other races (especially the ones later in the year).

Am I missing something here? If not, I am going to register for the FL 70.3.

I have done Gulf Coast 4 times and they always give the slots out prior to the Awards dinner on Saturday night after the race. A buddy of mine has done IMLP and IMWI the last two years having signed up after GCT both times. Get to the awards by about 4:30-5pm and get in line. You should have no problem getting a slot. Last year they still had IMWI slots at 7pm when I wondered over to have free beer.

I'm pretty sure it is 50 slots TOTAL, not for each event. At Eagleman they only had 10 slots each for WI, LP, and FL for 30 total.

I would think that you would have a decent shot at getting an IMFL slot by doing the FL 70.3.

We'll have to see how the 70.3 WC goes for next year whether or not it is a hit or miss based on this year. With the sever draft packs there have been a lot of upset people as a result, so many of them may not go for it next year. Only time will tell!

(And there were plenty of insane people that did IMFL and then stuck around for the 70.3 WC - ugh, no thank you!! )

GCT wasn't a "70.3" race this year and they had slots to give.
