I'm still fairly new to this whole tri thing, but am doing my first half ironman in 6 weeks. My biggest problem with the swim is that my goggles always fog up. I've tried a couple of the different things you can put on your goggles for that, but they don't seem to help. Is there some basic tip I'm missing here??? I'm trying to work through the physics of the whole thing and face temperature vs. water temperature, etc and if I should soak my goggles in the water for a few minutes first or if that would just make it worse. Seems like there should be an easy solution. Thanks!

Spit....works great. Wet the goggles first. Then spit into them, make sure you get good coverage. Then, rinse them very quickly with just a dunk or two in the water. Shake all the excess water out and don your newly de-fogged goggles. It works very well for me.

sounds like your goggles don't fit very well...  i would try another pair..  go for a silicone gasket (if you don't have them already) and try on several pairs..  i feel a slight suction when i put them on.. but they aren't too tight to cause discomfort..  depending on your budget you may want to try a seal mask... i love mine!!!  after swimming in the open water with it  i can't go back to regular goggles in the ocean.

good luck

Guess I should've mentioned the type of goggles - I already do where the Seal mask, although it's the kids version because my face is so narrow the regular version would leak. This is the only pair of goggles I've found so far that don't leak on me. I like the goggles, just not the fog

Hi I had several different googles and no matter what kind I had they have all seemed to fog at one point or another. Lara is right though the better the fit the less they fog, I use AquaSphere Kaiman goggles, they have nice soft cups that cover the whole eye orbit. One trick that I read in "Triathlon Swimming Made Easy" that has worked for me is to take some baby shampoo or in my case ultra swim, rub some on the lenses then rinse the excess off, I don't know why but it works for me.

I vote for the soap method: as I shower before hitting the pool, I squirt a little liquid soap in my goggles, swirl it around, then briefly rinse the soap out. I then dunk them once in the pool, and I haven't had a problem with fog since I learned this trick.
