Uh- she said she wanted a race that wasn't very hilly- and the Nashville marathon is very hilly- especially the last 1/2 of it. I'm running the flying Pig- it's May 6th. I've heard very good things about that race so I'm giving it a shot! Check it out at:

Only one I've done is Country Music (haven't heard of or tried the "Music City" Marathon), it was rather hilly and, even worse, HOT. Heard nothing but good things about Flying Pig, and Lincoln is on my must-do list as well. As far as Cali, I hear a lot about Big Sur, but I believe it is rather hilly as well. Hoping all the race links work as I have posted them, if not, go through the calendar at marathon guide. They also have reviews by people who have run the race. Master 1845 Athens, Ga. | Subject: RE: recommend a good marathon in April or May? Nashville is awesomely horrible, especially if it's your first race. I did Nashville as my first, and I don't think I could have trained enough for the hills. It was a cool venue, but it's incredibly hilly - and with long, hard hills, not short, high rollers like down here. Move your schedule up to March and you could do ING Atlanta! |

Master 1641 Cambridge, MA | Subject: RE: recommend a good marathon in April or May? Daremo - 2006-12-14 1:30 PM Boston ...... Yessirreee! Now *that's* the marathon. I go watch ever year, and have to restrain myself from jumping in and taking it all the way in to Copley. Never seen the scene at the start, but I've heard that it's a long wait to the starting mat. |

I haven't done it before but last year was its first running and it got great reviews. It is "hilly" but in a good way: the elevation profile is pretty much all down. There's a 1538 foot net drop. |

Yeah, I was looking at this one, too. Although the TrailDawg Triple Crown looks interesting as well. |

Champion 5345 Carlsbad, California | Subject: RE: recommend a good marathon in April or May? Well, nothing exactly matches your criteria, (Flat, In Cal, in that 4 week window) If the date is not so fixed, I would definitely recommend Napa. More than a few of my friends have run this race and several ran a BQ time there. If outside of Cal is OK, definitely go run the Pig. It fits into the dates and is a really great race. If you are interested in either of these races, I can point to some really great race reports from either of them. Good Luck |

Regular 97 Bay Area, Cali | Subject: RE: recommend a good marathon in April or May? thanks for all the feedback guys...I'll look into a few of these. Question about boston... someone told me that you don't necessarily have to qualify to race...that you can just register and run as well. I don't believe that to be true from the website (and I think it would delute the cache of the race), but perhaps someone has heard something similar?

Regular 107 Lynchburg, Va | Subject: RE: recommend a good marathon in April or May? Cincinnati Flying Pig is an awesome Marathon. This will be my third year at the Pig. About 13,000 total combining walkers and runners. Plenty of entertainment along the course, plenty of rest areas(port-a-johns), and a great expo. Not to mention the spread of food after you cross the finish is sweet.

Flat is flat, and hilly is hilly. Net elevation drop is better than gain, but will wreak havoc on your quads. Read reviews on this one, and you'll see that it's NOT a straight-line drop but that there are plenty of rollers along the way. |

Sorry to hijack- but I made a post in the Pig thread in the Ohio forum, but that forum is slow so I'd figure I'd ask here. Have you attended the pasta dinner before the Pig? If so how was it? I'm trying to deicde if it'll be better to get a pasta dinner ticket or just eat on my own. Let me know your thoughts- thanks! |

Champion 5345 Carlsbad, California | Subject: RE: recommend a good marathon in April or May? Nope, have to have a qualifying time to run this race. (The website has the qual times) They do have "Charity" bibs available but you usually sign up through the charity and must raise money for the charity. (I don't know much about this topic, but maybe others can chime in here) You might be thinking of New York which has both Guaranteed Spots and "Lottery" slots. You can either get a guaranteed entry with a qualified time or take your chances in the lottery. (1/4 change of getting in on any one year) Boston is the coolest though |

No, you can't register without having a qualifying race and time. But there are other ways in ....... charity slots, be a member of a local club (in Mass. obviously) and corporate slots. There's still a 6 hour cutoff for Boston for those older athletes that qualify: AGE GROUP MEN WOMEN 18-34 - 3hrs 10min - 3hrs 40min 35-39 - 3hrs 15min - 3hrs 45min 40-44 - 3hrs 20min - 3hrs 50min 45-49 - 3hrs 30min - 4hrs 00min 50-54 - 3hrs 35min - 4hrs 05min 55-59 - 3hrs 45min - 4hrs 15min 60-64 - 4hrs 00min - 4hrs 30min 65-69 - 4hrs 15min - 4hrs 45min 70-74 - 4hrs 30min - 5hrs 00min 75-79 - 4hrs 45min - 5hrs 15min 80 and over - 5hrs 00min - 5hrs 30min |

Master 2099 Madison, WI | Subject: RE: recommend a good marathon in April or May? If you want to hit the midwest, there's the Mad City Marathon, in Madison, WI. Pretty flat (a few small rollers) and generally temperate. Of course, last year they shut down the course early because it was so hot and humid. But, that's a fluke, unless this global warming thing is for real. http://www.madcitymarathon.com/ |
