Pre-race routine:

Ate bagel @ 4:30. Arrived very early and set up transition. Continued hydrating and ate Cliff Bar @ 7:00.
Event warmup:

Jogged up and down beach. Ran in place.
Swim
  • 09m 57s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Night of the living dead. I must become a better swimmer so I can pull out of the thrashing masses.
What would you do differently?:

Just be a better swimmer.
Transition 1
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Not bad for the first time. I took extra time to get all sand off my feet so I wouldn't have to deal with it during the bike and run.
What would you do differently?:

FASTER. Goal is under 1 minute. Maybe not use socks.
Bike
  • 44m 15s
  • 12 miles
  • 16.27 mile/hr
Comments:

Passed lots of people. Did a great job on a new bike. Master link in chain started sticking towards end and made me think the chain was going to fall off so backed off a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Get clipless and just get more practice cornering.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

Did a very fast transition. Happy with it.
What would you do differently?:

Practice racking more and getting gloves off.
Run
  • 28m 53s
  • 3.14 miles
  • 09m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Decent run. Was pretty fast for me.
What would you do differently?:

Work on keeping head in the game. Do more speed work.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training

Event comments:

Great race, especially for a first-timer!

Congratulations! Good race.
I tried to sign up for this one a few months ago, but since it was a woman’s race they wouldn’t let me in. My wife couldn’t do it since she just had a baby. I went down Saturday night while they were setting up so I could try a swim on the course. Then I drove the course with my wife, she wants to compete in it next year. About half of the race’s bike route goes right along with my morning bike route. (the Cobb pkwy leg) I wanted to go see the race that morning but was unable to, oh well. Good race, are you planning on any more this year?

Essential words of advice

Don't ever…ever …ever try a new restaurant the evening before your triathlon.
I was all set to race with you Whit, but due to a case a food poisoning I had to sit it out worshipping the porcelain god instead. I wasn't planning to eat out on Sat. night but we ended up staying a little late at a friend's house and the Italian Restaurant on the way home looked like a easy way to carb load. Huge mistake. Oh well, lesson learned.

It sounds as if you had a great time and your times looked fabulous.

Congratulations to you

Aims, I was looking for you there (as if I'd really be able to pick you out). I'm SOOOO sorry to hear that you got food poisoning. That really sucks. I definitely don't like to eat out before races. I just stick to my cornbread and potato dinner at home!

Definitely tell me what restaurant that was so I never go there.

Anyway, I hope we'll meet up sometime soon, whether at a race or for training.

Take care,
Whit

Excellent race Whit! And your first also!!! I saw your photo in the album section and do hope that it was taken before the race...you look too darned fresh and energetic to have done a tri. Of course I am judging by my standards; after my last tri, I looked like I had been beaten severely with an ugly stick! Your transition times are very very good as are your swim leg and running leg. Your bike leg was good also but you would benefit greatly by getting clipless pedals; it would take you a bit more time in the transition area to switch shoes but that would be offset by the time saved on the bike.
