Subject: Will I lose strength?
My trainer complimented me on my leg strength last night, but then mentioned that I will probably lose some strength as I lose more weight but that my power to weight ratio would improve.

I should have asked him more about what he meant, but I was completley exhausted and just ready to go home and crash at that point.

I am 5'6" and weigh 222 right now. My highest recent weight was 253 and my highest ever weight was around 270.

My goal weight is 150 or 160.

I can leg press 150 pounds with a single leg. (When we did both legs together I was doing 275, so surely now I could do at least 300.) On the hamstring curl, 90 lbs. felt easy. I do 115 on the leg extension.

Anyone else notice a decrease in strength as losing weight? How much?

well totally makes sense you have less required muscles to move you so you do not need it anymore. There is an old motto my running club told me about when I joined and that is if you drop alot of weight at once you will probbably have the fastest year after you droppped the weight, and do not feel bad the next year if you slow down.

Its your finish times that are important and not how much you can press unless your in a weight lifting club that goes straight weight you can do and not by the weight vs mass.

Bingo. But the more leg strength I have, then the better I should climb hills, so I hope I don't lose it, either.

yes but less weight = less power needed to climb a hill. muscle weighs lbs also

Power to weight ratio is more important than sheer strength in cycling, especially when it comes to hills.

If you drop 50 or 60 pounds (which is your goal), you'll have a dramatic difference in the amount of work over the course of however many thousands of uphill pedal strokes you might do on an average ride.

Good cyclists have very strong legs, but the power lifters in the gym aren't likely to make it up a long climb on a bike very easily.

Here's my experience, see if it helps: I'm a lifelong lifter, and started doing tris with a lot of muscle overlaid by a lot of fat.    I was around 230 lbs, and now I'm at 180.  I've continued to lift while doing tri training, and the strength loss has been minimal, if any.  I am squatting a slight bit less than I was at my heaviest, but otherwise I'm as strong as ever, and I seem to have retained the muscle mass as well.

My cycling has improved ENORMOUSLY over these two years, and it's due to losing the weight, as well as improving muscular endurance.  I have a much better power to weight ratio, and my power output has increased significantly, even while, as I said, my squatting strength has declined slightly.
