My local bike shop has a 2003 Trek Hilo - never out of the shop - fully equiped (save for pedals). They brought it down from storage for me to look at - then said if I was interested the would let it go for 2000$ CDN taxes in. So the US dollar equivalent would be roughly 1500$ including any sales tax.

They also size the bike and will install the pedals I purchase as part of the deal. The set up is Shimano 105 front and back with Ultegra shifters, San Marco saddle - I don't remember the rims because I was wiping the drool from my chin.

So my question - should I go for it? Anyone else riding this machine and if so how happy are you with it?

Doesn't sound like that great of a deal. I remember looking at the Hilo , I don't remember the specifics or the MSRP, but their entry-level Equinox 7 retails for $1400, 105 rear derailleur and dura ace bar end shifters. Seems like you're paying more for last years model.

Check out Cervelo's Dual, full Ultegra, sells down here for $1599. It's Canadian made, one would think it would be cheaper up there.

I would question "size the bike." Is the bike the right size for you? Or are they going to make it fit? Sometimes "fit remedies," like longer stems, make the bike less stable.

Install the pedals you purchase as part of the deal? What do they normally charge for this service? It takes my 12-year-old son about three minutes.

Your observation is quite right, Bear, you are better off purchasing a Cervélo in the States than in Canada. The Dual cost 2399CND up here, which is equal to 1831AMD. However, you are paying 1599AMD in the Stats, which is equal to 2094CND. The prices were set by Cervélo when the exchange rate from Canadian to American currency was over 1.60 .

Does that mean we can expect a price hike next year?
