Subject: swim vs bike vs run
I was wondering wich of the three legs is most important. Is ti better to be a strong biker and an OK runner or can a great runner make up ground to catch up. Looking at the last IM in Kona Normaan Stadler had great bike rides and won. Then again Chris McCormack and Lisa Bentley finish second and third respectfully with a strong run.

Or is it better to be good in all three.

IMO I would like to be good-great-good. Being great in all three would be nice.

So if you had to chose what would be/or is your breakdown for the three legs.

thanks

Last years Kona is a bad comparison.  I think only one other time has Kona been won on the bike, when stadler won it his first time 2 years ago.  The general line of thinking seems to be the events ranked: run, bike, swim, but you have to be proficent in all of them.

Folks that win their AG are usually good at all three.

You spend more time biking, then running, then swimming so one could want to be best at where you spend the most time.

Improving at your weakness usually brings the most overall improvement.

I'm an unbalanced triathlete but working at it...best on bike normally place top 1-3 in my AG, back of middle on the run depending on tri and same on swim. It sucks to know what place you are on off the bike and see your competitors catch you on the run.

I don’t know about you but I like to be good at most of the thingd I do, and if I am not good at it I'll try my best to become better. Triathlon = swim, bike AND run and IMO in order to be a good Triathlete you have to be good at ALL of sports. Otherwise why not focus on a single sport and become good at that? Anyway, KathyG suggested something very smart, for most us with limited time available for training we should be wise about how we spread our training time and the best way would be to focus a bit more on our limiters to balance out our strenghts at all 3 and later spread out the time more evenly to make sure we can go the distance and meet our personal goals.

IMO, if you don't come from a strong background in one of the three disciplines, your best bet is to become a jack of all trades, master of none. If you work on one of the sports to the detriment of the other two, you're not helping yourself in the long run. I would bet that for just about everybody an equal, calculated attack on all 3 is the ticket.
