Subject: swim in bike shorts?
I'm new to this and I have a question about the swim-bike transition. What is worn under a wetsuit? your bike shorts or a speedo that you have to change out of? Will the bike shorts' pad soak up 10 pounds of water? now that I think of it, do you run in your bike shorts or change into running shorts?

tri shorts, like cycling shorts in that they have a pad, but they are made for triathlons as they dry quickly

Tri shorts are modified bike shorts that have a light padding (chamois) that is significantly less absorbent than regular bike shorts. Trishorts are designed to be worn during all three events.

A question. I don't own a wetsuit (I use a speedo). My lone pair of biker shorts are gel packed and I slip them over my speedo in T1 - and yes, I know, I'm not suppose too, but I don't own tri shorts, so...

Anyways. I'm looking into buying a wetsuit for next season...and I want to know if people wear tri shorts underneath the wetsuit (full body)?

I intend to do all three in my bike shorts. I figure I'm going to be sweating on the bike anyway so it doesn't really matter how fast the bike pads dry. I don't expect the pads in the tri shorts to dry that much quicker anyway. Though if I could afford to buy tri shorts I'd wear them for whatever minor advantage they'd give me.

$41.95 for Desoto tri shorts from TriSports.com (don't forget the begtri coupon code!) I've got 2 pairs, one for training and one for racing/biking. I figure it'll be much easier to use tri shorts, and to mess around trying to change/add bike shorts when I'm still wet from the swim.

After the great replies to my "Kind of embarrassing question (swim suit) ... " post, and after reading up on the styles/materials last night, I have decided to look into a pair of Speedo "Quantum spliced jammers" for training in the pool and a pair of their Fastskin Tri shorts for racing.

Of course, I have to try em' on first but, as I say, those are the two I'm going to try frist.

Good luck,
Rob

Again, my vote for jammers for all three events. For distances under 30 miles, you don't need a pad in your shorts if you have put in enough bike miles.

I use bike shorts and nothing else. Works great, I don't even remember noticing that the pad was too wet at any of my events.

With all that goes on in a race, you don't even notice that the pad in your shorts. I use only tri shorts and as mentioned above, if you've spent enough time in the saddle, you should be able to ride "bareback" and not even feel it. The chamois pad in the tri shorts is not really a pad as you would find in road bike shorts, but it helps a little bit.

I've not worn a wetsuit in a race yet, but I would simply slide it over my tri shorts. For the transitions, you want them to be as quick as possible and minimize the time spent dressing or undressing.
