Pre-race routine:

Wasn't sure I wanted to go to this one...didn't feel right. But I got up, got dressed and headed out. Got me a Gatorade and a muffin on the way.
Event warmup:

Walked around a bit...not much of a warmup.
Run

Comments:

I started out being about the 16th male. But by the time I finished I was 27th. Hardware was given out to the top 25. I missed it by TWO!!! GRRRR.

The run was fun though. At the start we went up this huge berm, about 30 feet at a good 40 degree angle. The trails were rooty but not very technical. Lots of sand. Slowed me down a bit. My calf cramped up less then a quarter mile into it so my leg hurt thru the whole race. After finishing a 10K loop, we proceeded to do the 5K loop that the 5Kers did earlier that morning. On my last three miles I ran out of steam. My lack of pre-race nutrition caught up with me. I'd figured that they'd have Gatorade on the course but all they had was water for 9 miles. So no nutrition and a cramped leg started taking its toll. That's when about 7 people passed me. I was starting to think that maybe I should walk because the cramping was getting so bad...but I pushed thru it and finished in a respectable time. I was disappointed that I didn't get the top 25, I had been 17th in the 5K at this event last year and 2nd in my age group. But I was happy that I was able to get thru it even though I had that bad cramp in my leg.
What would you do differently?:

Eat more, pay more attention to stretching. I'm sure that's what killed me today.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit. They had HUGE Gatorade things full of HEED at the finish...why they couldn't have that on the course is totally beyond me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lake of nutrition, cramped leg.

Event comments:

I only rated it a three because of the lack of nutrition on the course. Sure I could have brought a gel or two, but I was expecting some Gatorade on the course so I could have more than water. But oh well, I'll get 'em next year.

nice run dude.

Seems like this promoter always has HEED.  IT's an acquired taste.  they had quite a bit of it at Alafia on the 5K course, though.  At least two stops... maybe not enough volunteers.
