Oh my God my first foray into the world of triathlons is in two weeks. I am a 35 yr old mama, already fit and strong before training but FREAKING now! "What have I got myself into?" is one thought at the forefront. How do you know if you are ever ready?

I am "just" doing a sprint ( 1/2 mi swim, 17 mi bike, 3 mi run) distance but the course is very hilly and the water very chilly. Because its my first, I decided not to invest in a wet suit. Hope I won't be regreting that in 60 degree water. Have I prepared enough for the swim (only once a week for 2 months). No! Have I prepared enough for the bike (2-3 12 mile rides a week). Probably! Have I prepared enough for the run ( 2-3 3 to 4 mile runs a week). I hope! I was fit before so I'm hoping that fear, ego and the minor training I have done will all help me finish.

Any tips for the uninitiated are appreciated!

Hi Tribaby,

I know where you are coming from. A few weeks before I was freaking out but I did my first on on Saturday and I lived to tell about it.

my best advice for you comes from the guy at our card loading supper the night before. Just finish and you will have set a PR personal record!!!

He said take your time drink the offered gatorade/H2o and smile for the family to take your pictures. And make sure that you take enough time to get the sand off of your feet.

So I did and I had a great time despite being very slow on the hilly bike course and a horribly rainy day!!

Once you have done the training and it sounds like you have,(the swim is the shortest part) it is all your attitude and doing your best!!

Have a great time and hope that you get hooked!!

All the best,
Stacey

Thanks Stacy! Glad to know I am not the only one feeling uncertain as they approach their first Tri. I'll make sure to get the sand off my feet, and more than one person told me to SMILE!

You may want to rent a wetsuit. 60 degrees is awefully cold.

I dunno Chucky, Autumn says 60 is down right balmy. Personally I think that's a little cold to run let alone swim! You guys (midwesterners) are nuts. ANything below 72 is considered freezing here in the northeast.

Tri baby what race are you doing and where are you from in Milwaukee? You will be great! I was really nervous before my first race but once I hit the water, I knew I would be fine! It was then that I knew I had all the training and I just needed to do what I had practiced.

CJ Wonder- I am actually from Appleton. The Tri is in Lake Geneva/Fontana. Normally when I jump into cold water I run screaming away from it. Will have to reprogram myself to run (screaming optional)INTO it!

Yes, WI is a unpredictable stae in terms of weather. Could be 80 degrees race day, could be 48 degrees. I am not joking! Water, though will be 60-65 at best. Refreshing!

It'll be awesome. You'll be fine. Might I suggest never calling a 7 line post "ramblings" around these parts. Thomas (tmwalshy) might show you what a real rambling is.......

You'll do fine!!! My only suggestion is that you do a couple of open water swims before you do your tri (unless you have already been doing them). I felt much more confident after I did 3 before I did my first tri a couple of weeks back. Good Luck!!

Oops I should have read a little further.
That race is hilly, but the water isn't 60 degrees... It's probably about 69... probably NOT quite 70. Did the same race last year and it rained the whole time... it was rather miserable...but I was so proud of myself for having finished without hurting myself or anyone else... I wrote a race recap about it... It's in the article section of this website... a place I rarely frequent anymore, since I'm engrossed lately with my friends here in FORUMS...
You can definitely DO it without a wetsuit... I debated back and forth about wearing mine, I ultimately did wear it... Everyone else had one, and I figured they couldn't ALL be wrong, could they?
So... good luck! You'll do great! I hope the weather is nice for you... It's such a beautiful place... the water in Lake Geneva is so clear!!! I did the Big Foot race earlier this year because I have a scheduling conflict with that race on Sept 11.
SMILE! WELCOME!

Awesome, whizzer. Thanks for the feedback. I looked at the pictures online at last year's Lake Geneva Tri. It did look miserable but there were some hearty sould without wet suits in the pictures. My in-laws are from Fontana so that's why we (husband and I) are doing this one. The lake temps now are at 65 according to my brother-in-law. Its been freakishly cold here this summer.

Sigh. I hate not knowing what I am doing and being on top of a situation. Maybe what I fear the most is making an ass of myself out there. Hopefully all will be too wrapped up in competition or cheering to notice!
Thanks.
