If you want to lose weight, you either have to burn more calories or consume less. It really is that simple.

Ooops, sorry, wrong argument.

Here, I have to say it entirely depends on the individual. How's that for wishy-washy?

I have to say the swim - not only because I am not a good swimmer, but because it is the only part of the tri where I will be seriously concerned about my own mortality. Pavement is either rolling, uphill, downhill or flat (yes some variations on smoothness inbetween) but water can be cold beyond belief, start out smooth and then turn to chop, crystal clear or brown as mud. It changes so much depending on where you are, but pavement is pavement.

I'm sure someone will tell me why I am wrong about this but those are my two cents.

I dunno, FatMan (can I call you something else? I just feel mean calling you FatMan), bikes make me concerned for my mortality more than swimming. I'm not really a speed person.

Honestly, I'm expecting the first half the bike to be the hardest.... it's 6.5 miles straight uphill. The good news is that it's all downhill on the way back, so I've got time to recover for the run.... But, I'll let you know in exactly 10 days.

As a 'getting fit' person, aka still got a bunch to lose, the run is very difficult. My fitness level is actually pretty high. I can go for a long long long time--but it's hard to lug around an extra person on that run!

Run by a long shot for me. The way my legs feel after getting off that bike and starting the run is the strangest sensation I've ever felt. I feel like my 1 year old looks trying to walk for the first time!

Is the question which discipline the tougest or which is toughest in the standard sequence of a triathlon? I think they have to be evaluated individually b/c obviously you are tired at the end of a race.

For me, I don't have much experience swimming so it's probably the most difficult to do at a decent pace. Plus I find training in a pool to be an all around pain.

I think running is the hardest because of the mental challenge. You can't wimp out on the swim or bike - meaning if you stop your stroke you are in trouble on the swim. If you stop peddaling on your bike you are stuck. But running...you can always stop and walk and that is the hard part for me. I really have to keep myself in it mentally.

The toughest part for me is the swim. I don't like it. I'm terrible at it. And when I am done with the swim leg, I am dizzy and disoriented. But, if the swim leg were taken out, it would be a duathlon and not a triathlon! So, I have to suck it in and do the best I can with it.

Definitely, THE BIKE!!! Why am I the only one who thinks the bike is the toughest? My knees just don't like the bike and I don't have as much fun riding as I do running or swimming. Can I just carry my bike up the next big hill???

swim here...only because I have more experience in the other two...haven't got enough open water swims under me to know, even on a rough day 'you have done this before'...so I still get nervous...bike and run no problem...

I say the swim is the toughest mentally, but the run is the toughest physically.

The 1st mile of the run when you have to work through the brick and get a pace is the worst all round. The last 1/2 mile or so of the run when the finish is in sight is the best part of the race.

I agree with Fatman (I too feel mean calling you that).  The swim is the hardest for me due to the possibility of drowning.  Still haven't mastered the fine art of trying to breathe while hyperventilating, although I have to say it's gotten easier with each race this season.

I plan to focus a lot on swimming, working on speed and technique, this winter to boost my ability and, more importantly, confidence.

For me, the bike is fun.  The run is tough at first, but once I get over "lead legs", it's fine.

Love the swim:
If I can jump off a perfectly good boat into 120 feet of 42 degree Fahrenheit water with 140 pounds of dive gear strapped to me, for fun no less, the open water swim is nothing. I grew up swimming in lakes because we couldn't afford a pool membership, so I'm pretty comfy with that part.

Love the bike ride:
Hills aren't as easy as they used to be when I was younger and skinnier, but they will be again - and so will I...

Hate the run. Well, maybe not hate, but troubled by the run. Too much of me to carry at the moment. Every week there's less of me to drag around, but It'll be nice not to carry the equivalent of a 75 pound Labrador Retriever on my back while running. THEN, I may actually enjoy running...

Toughest While Racing:
Swimming. In my vast experience of one sprint, the swim was by far the hardest. It was also the most rewarding.

Toughest While Training:
Running. I love to run, but I have a fairly recent back injury that can be really painful after a few miles.

Toughest on the wallet:
Bicycling. For obvious reasons.

So which is toughest? It depends on what I'm doing.

o.k. b4 all you runners lynch me i admit it used to be the swim but I've conquered that. My attempt to do the same for running however has proved futile.

If you get tired on the run you can walk a bit or stop....if you are dying on the bike you can coast a bit or stop.....if you crash on the swim YOU DROWN. MY vote goes to the swim.

Lucky for all of you I found this thread cuz I'm really good at ending all arguments definitively. You can ask my wife how often I'm right about everything. Anyway, it's obviously the bike. I love 'em all, but between the hills and the wind, the bike is the hardest on me. Plus it's not the run that makes the run hard, it's the bike, right?! And the run also precedes the finish of the race, which is a good thing. I love the run cuz it's where I can pick off the faster bikers!! There, don't you all feel better now?
