I know there's timing mats along the way, but is there anything else the M-dot folks do to help you keep track of your run laps? IMAZ is 3 laps, and I'm wondering if I'll get loopy and forget what lap I'm on (I know it sounds silly, but for my 1st IM I worry about this stuff). I won't be wearing my Garmin in the race. A friend of mine volunteered last year, and he thought everyone got rubber bands each loop or something. Is that how it works?

If during your race you find that you can no longer count to 3 then maybe it's time to call it a day.

I thought I heard/read somewhere you get a wristband after completing each lap...could be wrong, though.

I've thought about this too. Hopefully they do the wristband thing.

I remember last year watching online and hear the announce say "So and so return to the run course, you have another lap." That must have sucked, big time.

if i am on my knees and hands trying to get to the finish line, i will be on lap 3. Unless its a really bad day, then it could be lap two. Damn, what am i going to do?

Have someone pass you up a beer after each lap.  I don't imagine you'll be in any shape to have a fourth.

I once ran in a 5K that had a loop at the start and finish that I did three times instead of twice (don't ask how, it was just stupid), and ran a 3.9 mile 5K. So I when I did IMAZ last year I was worried about the exact same thing. I actually got a little hazy during the last bike loop, second guessing myself. Maybe I have a touch of OCD... the clock said no way was I on the second loop.

Anyway, there was nobody at IMAZ with wristbands or rubber bands. I'm sure you could put two bands around a wrist in T2 (or one each wrist), then chuck one the first loop, chuck another the second loop, then head in into the finish when you don't have any bands left. Or wear your Garmin...

BTW, I also wrote down my nutrition plan for the bike on my left arm with a Sharpie, and my run nutrition plan on my right arm. Just in case I got loopy...

Does your watch have a split function button.  Just hit it after each lap and the display will let you know.  I guess this would only work if you aren't keeping track of mile splits.  The alternative is to look up your name in the results the next day.  If you have a "DQ" next to your name, it means you didn't do all 3 laps (assuming they have a timing mat to keep track of chips for each completed lap)       Good luck.

Yeah I'm sure there are a bunch of ways you can keep track of it.  The "chuck a rubber band" idea is good.  I may use that.

On a similar note, are there mile markers on the run course?  I'd like to be able to keep track of my mile splits if possible.

Yes, there are mile marker signs. They have three numbers on them, of course, in case you are on loop one, two, or three.

Awesome...just what I wanted to hear.  The run is my best portion so I want to be able to modify my plan if I'm going too slow or know I'm on track if my speed is good.  Thanks for that good news!!

I was cheering people on last year near the finish and they were handing out those green glow necklaces right when you turned off of Mill. Hopefully after the first lap it will still be light out but then you can pick up a glow stick after the second lap.

(That's probably not going to work because you will only have one necklace and you'll think you have to do a 4th lap!!!)
